Housing Slump Could Add Jobs?

According to John Challenger of employment outplacement consultancy Challenger, Gray and Christmas Inc. the housing slump may actually cause job growth for occupations such as debt collectors, repossession officers, real estate lawyers, and rental agents.

Otherwise, 2008's job creation looks slow, and job cuts into the New Year look likely to increase.

"Employers have already pulled back on hiring," said Challenger. "The Bureau of Labor Statistics' latest survey of employers shows that monthly job gains have averaged just under 94,000 since June, compared to an average of 147,000 new jobs per month in the first five months of 2007."

Strong markets for 2008, however, include healthcare (RNs, physical therapists, and pharmacists); technology (information security specialists and network administrators); and law firms that provide legal accounting and consulting services.
