While ''a lot of people won't have the luxury of going for their first choice in a down economy,'' says economist Sophia Koropeckyj at Moody's Economy.com, there are many job sectors that remain strong. According to John Challenger, CEO of outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas, the following are industries that have a bright future.

Education: In the past education has steered clear of the effects of recession, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. This year it should remain the same.

Healthcare: Job opportunities for professionals such as medical assistants, physical therapists, physician assistants, home health aides, and medical records and health information technicians are growing and will continue to grow.

International business: According to Challenger, "if you have a strong knowledge of other cultures and an ability to work in another country, you'll find plenty of opportunities. If you're first-generation Chinese, with business skills and Chinese language skills, you're in good shape."

Other areas that remain promising include the energy, security, and environmental sectors.
