Over Fifty, Still Fabulous!

If you are someone over the age of fifty and are unsure of your own employability, going by the current state of the economy, rest assured, you are not alone. Despite what you might be afraid of, the truth of the matter is that there are plenty of job options for you, and there are plenty of things that you can do to sweeten your chances. Being over the age of fifty doesn't mean that you are not employable. It just might mean that you have to look a little harder for a job. Also when looking for a job keep some of these job search tips in mind.

Knowing the right job search tips can make all the difference if you are new to the market, and if you are over the age of fifty, this counts double! Think about the last time that you looked around for a job. There is a good chance that the world has changed a little bit, as has the industry. Keeping the following job search tips in mind will increase manifold your possibility of getting the desired result.

1.Network as widely as you can.
You never know when a job opportunity is going to surprise you, and the thing that might surprise you the most is where it comes from! When you are looking for a job, it helps to remember people whom you know. Think about the people who you have interacted with positively in the last few years. This can mean a lot when you are looking for work. You never know when telling someone that you are on the lookout for a job will pan out. You have more contacts than you think you do, so take some time to revive them and you can get the work that you need.

2.Specialize
If you have spent a long time at a single job and have not job hopped very much, you may be concerned that your knowledge is specialized and not diverse enough to fetch you a new job. Having specialized knowledge, however, is not such a bad thing after all. While knowing how to do a lot of things can help, you will find that sometimes knowing how to do just a few things very, very well can make a big difference! If you are looking for a change of job, the time is just right to go ahead and specialize. Start hunting within your field or your industry. Think about where your skills and your talents are used. Make sure that you thoroughly know what you are handling. This might be a great time for you to get a new job and to say hello to a much better job, never mind the fact that you are over fifty.

3.Becoming tech savvy
You don't need to know programming languages, and you don't need to flash a fortune in hardware, but the truth is that if you are over fifty and are on a job hunt your communication knowledge needs to be current. Make sure that you are familiar with methods of communication like instant messaging, and also with everything that has to do with social networking. If you work in any field that concerns people, you need to understand things like Web 2.0 and how it affects the market. Also in your search for work it helps to either have a blog or a presence online. Where your resume is posted will also count. So, it is very important to be tech savvy. When it comes to job search tips, this might be the most important that you will come across.

4.Update yourself
When you are looking for a job make sure that you give out the right kind of energy. You should be able to convince your prospective employers that you are going to be a good fit. Take a good look at the way that you portray yourself. This doesn't mean that you should try to look thirty; rather you should come across as a person who is in sync with the time. Make sure that you have a good, updated hairstyle and your dressing sense should reflect your up to date wardrobe. Remember that you need to look good just to get in the door. All the same, don’t try to portray yourself in a way that is a complete lie; just remember that you should know what they are seeing.

5.Get ready
When you are going around looking for a new job, be prepared that you will need to spend some time on this search. Job-hunting is never fun no matter what your age is, and our statistics show that, for older people, the hunt takes longer. Where someone in their twenties might find that their job hunt takes around 16 weeks, someone over the age of fifty can see that average climb to a search of 22 weeks. Chances are, you are going to be doing some serious hunting, so get ready, be prepared and make sure that you keep that list of contacts close. If the search seems to keep dragging on then you shouldn't despair; it is happening everywhere.

There are plenty of job search tips to keep in mind when you are over fifty, but remember that you are still fully employable. The route towards getting the job might be a little bit difficult. You may need to make certain adjustments and you will also be required to update your knowledge. But most important, you will need to think about what you can do to make yourself stand out prominently. There are plenty of different options available to you when you are over fifty, so check out your resources and make sure that you know what to expect. There is no dearth of job when you are really out to get it.
