Protecting Your Job in a Recession

For many people, the threat imposed by the recession is something that they have to think about with a great deal of seriousness. The worries hovering in their minds could be: what kind of debt do they have, or how will their families cope should they enter into a bad financial situation? Looking into your own job safety during recession is quite important, and if you want to make sure that you are going to survive the recession intact, you need to keep several things in mind. A recession is not the end of the world, and by keeping a few things in mind, you can protect yourself against it.

When you are looking at a recession, you know that there is always a chance that you may lose your job. Some people have more to worry about than others, but there are certain things that everybody will be well advised to do during recession. If your financial stability is on your mind, then instead of panicking, make sure that you implement strategies that will let you stay employed and solvent during this difficult financial time.

Who knows you?
When you are thinking about protecting your job during recession, think about who knows you and who knows your work. Do you know your supervisor by name and have you engaged him or her on a more personal level. The truth of the matter is that it is always more difficult to fire someone whom you know. When you look at the people who have already been let go, you will find that they are the ones who are less intimate with their co-workers and with their supervisors. Make sure that you put some time and effort into making yourself an office fixture. Make sure that you engage personally. It is not always enough to do a good job; you need to make your presence felt in your office. This is something that you should keep in mind when you are looking to keep your job!

What have you done?
If protecting your job during recession time is something that you have been thinking about, go the extra mile and think about what you've done for your company in the past. Count your accomplishments over the past few years. Focus on the things that have happened more recently and therefore will be much fresher in people's minds. When you are looking at your achievements, do not feel shy in bringing them up in your conversations. Make sure that people know how instrumental you were in all such accomplishments. Don’t let your co-workers sweep your awards and commendations under the carpet. This is the time to let your supervisors know how important you are to their company and to their real goals.

Do you go the extra mile?
When you are thinking about job safety during recession times, remember that this is not the time to turn down overtime. Accept any offers of extra work that come your way, and accept it gracefully. If you show hesitation, this might indicate that you are looking to get out of it, or that you have something else that you would rather be doing. During recession, when you need to protect your job you should be willing to go above and beyond. Volunteer for projects; you never know when you are going to stumble on something important. This can go a long way towards letting you keep your job.

Are you essential?
What do you do that no one else does? Ideally, you should be the only person in the office who can perform a certain task. Think about what jobs you can double up on, and what responsibilities are solely yours. The more essential you are, the less redundancy that you represent, the better off you are going to be. What have you got going on, or what do you take care of that no one else does? There are plenty of different things that you need to consider in this regard. Remember to call attention to the fact that you are essential. Just because you know that you are essential doesn't mean that other people know this!

Do you have a plan?
When you are looking at your job safety during recession time, remember that the best motto is to plan for the worst while hoping for the best. If you get fired or laid off, what is your plan going to be? Do you have another job that you might be interested in, do you have enough savings to get by? You'll find that there are plenty of different options that might be open to you. Start thinking about other scenarios while you have the job security to do so. What other kinds of jobs are you fit for, and where are your connections? In days when everyone is thinking about their job safety during recession, do some networking. Unearth the people that you are familiar with, and think about what you can do in order to get on board. This can mean a lot, and it can also help put your mind at ease.

Conclusion
If you look around yourself you will see that you are not the only one worrying about your job safety during recession. Take some time to think, and to plan, and you'll find that you are in a better shape than you think!
