As the nation's largest city, New York City (or as we'll be calling it from here on in for convenience's sake, simply New York) offers a great number and variety of different employment options.

New York employment encompasses virtually every economic sector, from high tech jobs to the media, manufacturing to service sector jobs, public sector work to yes, even a little bit of agricultural work. Whatever it is you do for a living, you can probably do it here and if you're persistent in your job search, you can be paid well and enjoy all of the many amenities which this city has to offer to people who live and work in perhaps the most exciting place in the entire world.

There are New York jobs available in all five of the counties which make up the city: New York County (also known as the borough of Manhattan), Kings County (better known as Brooklyn), Queens County (Queens), Bronx County (The Bronx) and Richmond County (Staten Island). While the city has an excellent public transportation system consisting of 24 subway lines, most of which operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week and hundreds of different bus lines, making it easy to make one's way around the city, it's always nice to be able to avoid a long commute and work in the same part of the city where you live. Thanks to the sheer number and scope of New York employment opportunities, this is a very real possibility, no matter where in the city you happen to make your home.

There's probably no need to tell you that New York is one of the country's and indeed, the world's financial hubs. The city holds a place of primary importance in the world's financial systems, being on a par with London and Tokyo in that regard. As such, there are an enormous number of jobs in New York which are in the finance and banking sectors proper as well as with the many companies which serve the business needs of the city's major and minor financial players. While the majority of the jobs in this industry are to be found in (where else?) lower Manhattan's Financial District, especially on Wall Street, you'll also find New York employment opportunities in this sector in Midtown Manhattan, downtown Brooklyn and in Long Island City, Queens, where Citibank maintains many offices just across the East River from Midtown (as it happens, the Citibank tower is also the second tallest building in the city).

Media jobs in New York make up another large portion of the employment picture in the city. New York is home to most of the major broadcast and cable networks in the United States and after Los Angeles, the city is the largest center of television and film production in the country. You'll find television studios in both Manhattan and Queens, where the PBS children's program Sesame Street is filmed, along with many feature films and television programs. There are, as you can probably imagine, a large number of different New York employment opportunities in this industry spread throughout the city, with the majority of these jobs being located in Manhattan.

If you're new to the job market, you'll be glad to know that New York is a place where you can find entry level positions in any and every industry; and it is for this reason that the city is such a magnet to people beginning their careers and hoping for some valuable experience in their first jobs out of school. This does mean that there is a higher degree of competition for New York jobs than you'll find in many smaller cities around the country, but the sheer size of the city and its job market means that when one door closes, another really does open somewhere else. It's certainly true that there really are always jobs in New York; it's just a matter of finding them.

One thing which New York job seekers should be aware of is that it definitely pays to take a proactive approach to finding New York employment due to this higher amount of competition. It's important to pursue jobs a bit more aggressively and put your best foot forward in any interviews you land - in America's largest city, it pays to make sure you stand out from the crowd.
