Google always has jobs for those who are smart enough to compromise expectations, in order to include the top employer brand in their resumes.

People working at Google in careers at the forefront of search engine technology and development of web applications usually bag jobs at double their former pay scale, once they leave after an acceptable tenure. Jobs in Google impart value to the resumes of employees and escalate their career prospects forever. As a company, Google is acutely aware of the fact and fully leverages the value of its brand as an employer to optimize human resources, pay scales, and employee benefits. Employees working in Google have careers that become more rewarding after leaving Google on good terms, and having gained useful experience and knowledge.

The reality of jobs in Google

Google jobs carry the same risks and benefits as those associated with any strong employer brand. People leaving Google careers on bad terms with the company, and seeking jobs only after they resign, find themselves in extremely tight spots since the market refuses to accept any other reason for leaving Google but for careers with added advantages. The only way to use Google careers to the advantage of personal career goals is to either continue with Google, or negotiate with other employers while fruitfully engaged at Google in jobs of subject experts.

In jobs at Google, you will get offers and will be able to negotiate advantageous positions with other employers as long you are still in the job. However, if you resign from the job for any reason before bagging another job, you run risks of remaining jobless for extended periods and may be unable to utilize the full value of the Google brand before you happen to add at least one interim employer on your resume. That is the way of jobs with any strong employer brand, and it applies equally to those in Google careers.

Google jobs: The good factors

Google has many jobs to offer as an employer and each position has its own outlook. People enjoying careers in Google aligned with the company's image as a leader in IT amplify their future prospects considerably. Top benefits include:
  • Addition of one of the world's leading employer brands on the candidate resume
  • Outstanding work opportunities at the leading edge of technology
  • Excellent environment for networking with top professionals in the industry
  • Working for an employer who consciously tries to promote a positive work environment
Whether you take into account the free food and sporadic offers for stocks or not, the above four have the highest appeal for those who opt for Google jobs.

Google jobs: The bad experiences

People join Google for careers of excellence and in search of finding a dream employer. However, it remains that not all people are made for all work-environments, and even within Google, as in any big company, the nature of work-environment can vary greatly from office to office, department to department, room to room, and even from cubicle to cubicle. It is not uncommon to find employees frustrated with their careers in Google and it is all a matter of differences between employee expectations and immediate work-environments.

It is unreasonable to believe that any employer with half a brain would consciously make life difficult for employees. However, as with any other big company, it is not possible to maintain continuous surveillance and universally uniform environment in Google. To a great extent, the principal reasons of people becoming disgruntled in Google jobs stem from inept managers who fail both their superiors as well as their subordinates. Bad experiences of people in Google careers or searching for Google jobs include:
  • Low pay packet compared with similar positions in smaller companies
  • Grueling multi-session interview stretching over days
  • Long response time after completion of interview, typically two to six months to generate callbacks
  • Frequent encounters with inept management
  • Frequent changes of management
  • Frequent lapse in HR responsibilities including attending to human situations of interviewees and employees
There has been reported instances of interviewees having to go without food for a whole day simply because one interviewer communicated that lunch will be in the next session and the next interviewer forgot all about the need for food of the interviewee. There has also been reported instances of employees being offered one set of responsibilities in the negotiation table and being offered a different set of responsibilities after joining. One of the worst cases reported is of an employee who had to wait for two weeks with a one-month old child and his wife in a room without any furniture or amenities since their household had to be shifted only by transport arranged by Google, and it was late as usual.

Barring the fact that Google is rarely heard to provide personal attention to problems of individual employees, most other things in Google jobs come out in favor of Google as an employer.
