Following are the dos and don'ts to help you make a smooth transition from a new hire to a trusted colleague.
The dos
Be friendly all the time even when you are exhausted by processing the new information and adjusting yourself to the new environs and culture.
Be inquisitive with your coworkers. Spark cordial conversations without being personal. Just talk about the popular TV shows or last night's sports events.
Find out from your colleagues where you can have a refreshing cup of coffee, buy breakfast, eat lunch and shop. You can thus go close to your colleagues.
Give your new friends time to warm up to you.
Bring a home-made treat to the lunch room for all to enjoy. Cupcakes, cookies or fresh fruit are crowd pullers.
The don'ts
Don't poke your nose into other's affairs. You can't win the trust of your colleagues if you encroach upon their privacy.
Don't be in a hurry to hear all the tales involving your colleagues. Have patience, you will hear all those famous and infamous tales soon.
Don't always speak about the workplace you had left. Avoid referring to what you did when you were with your former employer. Such references prompt your colleagues to wonder why you don't go back.
Don't invite people to your shows. Wait for them to show interest in your extracurricular pursuits.
Don't hastily invite your colleagues to join your online network. Your network should have such people with whom you have a personal relationship rather than those who have the same employers as you.
