The Job Description

An organization or system can usually be operated in several ways, but the best way is not necessarily the most obvious one. Operations research specialists use their knowledge of engineering, mathematics, and economics to decide on the most efficient way to use all available resources to achieve maximum results.

This field is concerned with the design and operation of worker-machine systems. Using a number of scientific methods of analysis, operations research analysts decide on the best allocation of resources within an organization or system. These resources include such things as time, money, trained people, space, and raw materials.

In another application of operations research techniques, analysts might apply appropriate theories and methods to two possible research projects that are competing for funding. Their analysis could produce information on which project would probably achieve the best results in the shortest time with the available money and other resources.

The applications of operations research are numerous. Originated during World War II to deal with the allocation and tactical employment of available equipment, workers, and materials, operations research is now a standard and growing aspect of management in industry, marketing, capital development, financial planning, government, and exploration activities.

A number of people in this field are engaged in teaching and research.

Related jobs include industrial engineer, systems analyst, office manager.

Places of Employment and Working Conditions

Many operations research analysts work in office settings, many others work in classrooms, and some work outdoors. Some others are engaged in laboratories, factories, and hospitals. It is often an active field, with the analyst moving throughout a building or to several different locations to study the operation of a company or system.

Qualifications, Education, and Training

An analytical mind, resourcefulness, patience, good communication skills, and the ability to get along with people are necessary.

High school should include as much mathematics and science as possible.

A degree in engineering, mathematics, economics, or the physical sciences are all acceptable beginnings for this field since there is no typical operations research program. Graduate study is, however, usually necessary, and a working knowledge of computers should be acquired during undergraduate or graduate education.

Potential and Advancement

The demand for competent operations research analysts far exceeds the supply. This trend is expected to continue, providing increasing job opportunities for those who pursue it as a primary career or as an adjunct to another area of specialization. The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that the field will grow by 30% between 2014 and 2024, providing unrivaled job opportunities for those in the field.

The potential for advancement in this field is excellent. Experienced analysts can advance to supervisory and management positions in all types of organizations. Because this field provides exposure to the full spectrum of operations within a company or organization, it is becoming recognized as a major training ground for senior management and executive positions.

Many experienced operations research analysts become management consultants, opening their own companies or working for an established management consulting firm.

Income

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, operations research analysts make $78,640 per year, on average.
