Southern Nuclear Operating Company (SNC), headquartered in Birmingham, AL, operates Southern Company's six nuclear reactors at three locations in Georgia and Alabama: two reactors at Plant Vogtle, near Waynesboro, GA; two reactors at Plant Hatch, near Baxley, GA; and two reactors at Plant Farley, near Dothan, AL. In addition, construction activities are underway for two new reactors at our Plant Vogtle location.

Emergency Diesel Generator Engineer (Corporate)
Southern Nuclear Operating Company?s corporate Fleet Systems Engineering Department provides governance and oversight for the Southern Nuclear Fleet. We are seeking an experienced Emergency Diesel Generator (EDG) engineer. This position is responsible for providing governance, technical leadership, and guidance in the area of diesel generators. The successful candidate should have experience with diesel generators and an understanding of diesel performance and regulations used in the nuclear plant environment is a plus. Activities involve providing governance in according to established regulatory requirements, identifying industry best practices, developing/maintaining fleet procedures, setting a strategic vision, participation in industry working groups, and troubleshooting problems associated with components impacting diesel performance.
Bachelor of Science degree in an engineering discipline from an accredited college or university, or Professional Engineer license, is required. (Engineering Technology will not be accepted).
Mechanical or Electrical Engineering preferred. Nuclear, Chemical, and Civil Engineering degrees will be considered based upon the candidate?s experience.
A strong technical background in engineering, and working knowledge of applicable codes, standards, and regulatory requirements related to nuclear power generating facilities.
The ability to solve problems and make sound engineering judgments, based on experience and proper application of industry practices, in order to provide timely and appropriate resolutions to component issues that might impact plant output, operation, or safety.
The expertise to address operational, maintenance, and reliability issues for diesel engines, control systems, and generators.
The ability to develop long range plans and strategies for maintaining or replacing equipment to ensure reliable and economical operation and maintenance of the EDGs in the fleet.
The ability to communicate technical issues and drive problem resolution through various levels of management at the plant sites and corporate office.
The ability to work effectively across diverse groups at the plant sites and corporate office to drive standard technical solutions to system/component issues.
The experience and knowledge to technically interface with vendors and service suppliers on procurement, repair plan development, troubleshooting, and resolving equipment performance problems.
The ability to ensure SNC stays abreast of emerging issues and technological developments within the assigned area of responsibility, to work closely with site engineering, maintenance, operations, and work control personnel by providing expertise for assigned components and systems.
The ability to assist in the development of specifications.

MAJOR JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
This position will be responsible for the SNC emergency diesel generator performance and associated processes/procedures are developed and standardized throughout the SNC fleet. The EDG Engineer is responsible for establishing the appropriate metrics to ascertain EDG performance, develop improvement plans, provide the technical basis for system improvements, provide oversight, assist in problem solving/troubleshooting initiatives, and provide specific technical expertise to the nuclear plant Engineering, Operations, and Maintenance groups as necessary.
Duties may include, but are not limited to:
Developing and maintaining EDG metrics, procedures, and general coordination with respective site organizations (e.g. engineering, maintenance, operations, outage management, etc.) in support of diesel performance and outage implementation.
Provide technical support to the SNC plant sites for diesel generators and associated support/control equipment.
Develop and maintain implementing procedures and developing engineering evaluations and recommendations for problems and issues.
Industry participation to ensure SNC stays abreast of emerging issues and technology developments relevant to diesel generators.
Support advancement of standardization and sharing of best practices across the Southern Nuclear Fleet.
Establish and maintain strong working relationships with counterparts at each nuclear plant site.
Ensure implementation of corporate, plant and department policies and procedures.

Maintain unescorted access to all SNC facilities.
Please note: This position may require the successful completion of the SNC Initial Engineering Training as a condition of continued employment. The training is approximately 14 weeks long and is a rigorous period that may require studying after work hours.
