The Executive Director of External Communications provides strategic direction and oversight for all consumer, corporate PR and internal communication activities on a domestic and global basis. He/she will partner with senior leaders to ensure the PR and internal communications plans advance the company strategy, support key business objectives, increase employee engagement and build/protect the company’s reputation as the world’s greatest toy and baby store. This role reports to the Executive Vice President of Global Communications & PR and oversees the teams responsible for all internal and external communications.

Key Tasks & Responsibilities:

Develop and oversee the strategy and execution of comprehensive communication plans designed to support the company business objectives.

Identify opportunities to tell our transformation and growth story internally and externally – to the press, customers, employees and key stakeholders.

Act as an advisor and leader, and back up to the EVP, Global Comms, in the face of issues and crises affecting the business, providing ongoing counsel on real-time communications activities. Provide coaching and training to prepare executives and other company spokespeople for events, presentations and interviews, and provide feedback on messaging following the engagement.

Organize and engage the full communications teams to ensure integration, maximum use of resources and consistency of message.

Oversee the day-to-day activities of the team to ensure they are focused on initiatives that drive sales/traffic to our stores and online.

Identify and provide direction and support to the teams – so they can implement new industry best practices and emerging technologies in the areas of PR, social and internal communications.

Regular, ongoing coaching and development of PR and internal communications team members, ensuring their individual and team development and fostering a culture of learning.

Build relationships with international partners/counterparts to improve information and best-practice sharing. Collaborate to create campaigns and messaging to reflect the global nature of the business and the need to tell a consistent story across geographies.

Act as a lead company spokesperson for media requests on high visibility, complex topics from corporate announcements, earnings, recalls, lawsuits and on crisis or other reputational issues.

Effectively manage communications vendors, budgets and other administrative tasks to ensure ROI on dollars spent.

Qualifications

Bachelor of Arts or Science in Journalism, Communications or related area of study

Minimum 10 years Public relations experience in a corporate or agency setting

Strong verbal skills, presence and demonstrated ability to work closely with senior-level executives

Proven track record in managing teams and projects and agencies/vendors

Confidence in coaching and mentoring staff, both senior and junior-level

Resourcefulness, flexibility, resiliency and understanding of what it takes to always be one-step ahead

Strategic thinking, creativity and ability to work in high-pressure or ambiguous situations

Expert attention to detail, excellent writing and editing skills

Top-notch media relations skills
