R6699 Farm Ranch Underwriting Area Manager (Open)
This position manages a Farm/Ranch Underwriting area and related support functions. Provides leadership and technical support of people, systems, and processes through first line managers and directly to Underwriters. Establishes and maintains underwriting integrity and standards for risk selection and compliance with regulatory agencies to meet corporate, divisional, and departmental goals.
This position requires travel up to 25% of the time.
Specialized Knowledge and Skills Requirements
Demonstrated experience providing customer-driven solutions, support or service
Demonstrated management or leadership experience.
Extensive knowledge and understanding of profitability, growth, and risk concepts.
Extensive knowledge of Commercial Lines policies, underwriting philosophy, and procedures gained through progressive underwriting, product management, premium audit, or claim experience.
Strong knowledge and understanding of insurance industry and insurance-related financial concepts.
CPCU designation or equivalent completed or in progress.
Additional Job Information:
Candidates selected for an interview with the hiring manager will be asked to complete a leadership skills assessment.
The ideal candidate would have experience in Farm and Ranch commercial insurance. More importantly, they would have strong leadership and communication skills with the ability to connect with staff and lead through change.
Management of Underwriting Operations
Ensures communications and interactions with sales management and the field force in the designated geographic area regarding farm underwriting operations, objectives, procedures and changes that will impact the field. Maintains positive relationships with sales management to resolve problems and improve results in the Farm/Ranch product lines.
Provides oversight of effective problem resolution practices that responds to insurance department and consumer affairs complaints; claims problem resolution which includes contract interpretation, reformations, claims committees and ab initio considerations; and escalated or sensitive issues arising from internal and external customers including the field force.
Analyzes reports ( profit and growth results; industry trends, division trends) and works with the Commercial Operations Director to develop action plans based on trends to achieve desired results. Works with the Quality Assurance Manager to implement the action plans. Supports activities related to State Business Plans and Division Profit Plans.
Provides oversight of training and development plans for underwriters and/or premium audit staff in coordination with other departments in Farm Ranch Operations and the Education Division to support desired performance standards and expertise requirements needed to achieve business goals.

Participates as a member of the management team.
Maintains an active awareness of American Family's business environments, corporate culture, and structure to support key decision making. Develops a strong knowledge of industry and competitor activities.
Interacts with the field force, and sales management as well as other divisions as the primary voice of the unit.
First Line Management/Leadership for Individual Unit or Team
Manages direct reports, systems, and projects to achieve unit goals in accordance with company policies and practices.
Prepares and analyze unit plans and reports.
Provides leadership by exhibiting influence and expertise, thus affecting the results of the operating area.
Creates an effective work environment by developing a common vision, setting clear objectives, expecting teamwork, recognizing outstanding performance, and maintaining open communications.
Develops staff through coaching, providing development opportunities through delegation of responsibility and authority, providing performance feedback, effective performance reviews, and establishing development plans to include continuing education.
Risk Selection/Risk Management
Evaluates line of business risk characteristics/trends and is responsible for development and implementation of procedures and directing the activities to ensure proper risk management including: eligibility, coverages, pricing, loss control recommendations, etc. Responsible for risk analysis, accurate risk selection, appropriate selection of coverages and pricing to achieve stated divisional objectives for growth in profitable targeted classes of business. Ensures compliance of underwriting operations with State and Federal regulations and company guidelines and practices.
Obtains appropriate technical expertise and support for the underwriting of unique, complex or large premium accounts which can include placement of property and excess/umbrella liability reinsurance.
