Intellectual Property Attorney
The candidate provides legal services supporting the University's research, technology transfer and related activities with a particular emphasis on intellectual property law (patent, copyright and trademark) in the Life Sciences. Under general direction and with considerable latitude for independent judgment and action. Advises University licensing managers and leadership on patent, copyright and other intellectual property matters arising out of the University's research and academic programs and technology transfer activities including, but not limited to, evaluating technologies and securing appropriate intellectual property protection. Oversees activities of outside counsel in specialized areas such as patent, trademark, copyright law in securing intellectual property protection. Interacts regularly with litigation counsel, with University affiliated organizations, and with contracting or funding parties and their attorneys. Assists in selection and supervision of outside IP counsel. Provides legal services required for the analysis and implementation of IP transactions and ventures related to University research such as options, licenses, confidentiality agreements, material transfer agreements, inter-institutional agreements, collaboration agreements. Researches, analyzes, negotiates and provides opinions and advice on research grants and sponsored programs administration, other local, state and federal laws, and regulations or policies related to intellectual property at the University. Participates in complex contract administration and dispute resolution. Provides litigation avoidance counseling. Coordinates contact with government agencies and responds to governmental initiatives. Monitors and provides compliance advice in connection with relevant legislative and regulatory developments. Prepares and maintains appropriate records and reports. Reviews policy and provides consultation regarding IP legal matters. Conducts presentations and training workshops to the University community regarding legal issues related to technology transfer and small business formation. Working closely with other University attorneys and administrators participates in the development and interpretation of policies and procedures related to intellectual property and other related transactional matters as assigned. Serves on University governance and ad hoc committees involving IP issues as assigned. Other duties as assigned by Director, AVP, Counsel and University leadership.
