This is the specialist level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees at this level solve complex problems, manage work , and provide leadership to others in engineering areas of specialization, with minimal supervision and increased latitude for un-reviewed work. Incumbents function in lead roles providing guidance to others. They are also expected to have advanced skills and have the ability to work independently. Progression to this level is typically restricted on the basis of business need. Job Duties and Responsibilities:This position is in the Distribution PQRI Department and is responsible for engineering and in-depth technical support in the areas of Distribution Protection, Control and Automation (DPAC).
The DPAC Engineer develops protective settings for distribution circuit exit breakers and line reclosers. Responsibility includes development and implementation of protective device settings templates for applications outside of the substation fence (line reclosers, distributed generation protection, relay controlled automated switching equipment, etc.). Other responsibilities include device firmware version tracking/support & applicable device interface software support. The DPAC engineer will provide engineering training on protection philosophy, protective device deployment, etc. (outside the fence / distribution) and craft training on new devices, practices on deploying devices, etc.
Provide engineering review and support with protective device placement for reclosers, sectionalizers, fuses, etc. Assist with troubleshooting/event analysis of distribution trip out events, and helps resolve complex technical problems involving protection & control and automation devices. Develops sound engineering recommendation for corrective actions and protection improvements.
Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis and resolution of complex problems in area of expertise with the ability to visualize long-term results and assess impacts on a system-wide basis.
Ensures accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling and monitoring of work activities; handles differing situations which require searching for solutions within area of expertise.
Prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations and sketches with the ability to conduct analysis and recommend process enhancements and standards relative to area of assignment.
Conducts engineering and related studies with full technical responsibility for planning and coordinating complex projects; applies extensive technical expertise to manage projects and disseminate knowledge to enhance the organizational unit's competitive position.
Possesses and applies a broad knowledge of principles, practices, and procedures; demonstrates ability to analyze and recommend enhancements to business processes and develops standards relevant to area of assignment.
Keeps abreast of new developments, technologies procedures and equipment.
Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities.
Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills. Maintains accurate records and files.
Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally.
Coaches and mentors other engineering and non-degreed engineering professionals.','!*!Basic/Required Qualifications:
Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited program or state registration as a Professional Engineer. A Master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B. S. engineering degree
Minimum of 8 years of engineering experience
Registration as a Professional Engineer
Minimum of five (5) years distribution protection and controls experience
Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering with emphasis in Power System
Extensive knowledge and understanding of protective relays, reclosers and application of distribution protective devices.
Knowledge of distribution system electrical design and operation
Experience in the utility industry
Ability to deal with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds
Demonstrated written and oral communications skills, including the ability to present information, facilitate meetings and provide direction to others
Skilled in the practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations and preparing and presenting recommendations
Demonstrated effective team work skills
Skilled principles of project management
