Under general supervision, manage overall slope stability for construction and operation of Crushed Ore Leach Stockpiles (CLSs), Tailings Storage Facilities (TSFs), Water Dams (WDs), and their foundations. Serve as resource for Geotechnical information and analysis.
Conduct regular Geotechnical inspections of active and inactive structures, maintaining and analyzing appropriate databases
Oversee construction Quality Control (QC) and Quality Assurance (QA) activities for TSFs, CLSs, and WDs
Develop SOPs for best practices and dam/leach stockpile safety
Coordinate with Operations regarding mine or process changes that may impact design implementation or stability of structures
Manage and provide Geotechnical oversight for projects with outside contractors related to drilling, water control, foundation geology, construction materials, etc. on crushed ore leach pads, tailings storage facilities, and storm water dams
Actively engage Engineer of Record (EOR) for review and ensure implementation of EOR recommendations
Manage Engineering Technicians who support monitoring instrumentation
Develop and maintain operational geotechnical data inventory
Analyze data for trends and anomalies, ensuring data is within design specifications, and taking action to improve operations or as required for TSF, CLS, and WD safety
Communicate accurate, timely and relevant geotechnical information to Operational management team and staff
Serve as point of contact with FCX Tailings and Crushed Leach Stewardship Team, including tracking all recommendations, ensuring compliance with those recommendations, and reporting actions regularly
Actively support operation’s Water Team Engineer with analysis of material properties, water loss parameters, and operational changes for TSFs, CLSs, and WDs
Proactively seek improvements to the safe construction and operation of TSFs, CLSs, and WDs
Partner with Process Engineers to identify best practices which may improve production while maintaining geotechnical stability of structures
Assist with the development, maintenance and implementations of strategic plans to enhance the operation’s slope stability program
Prepare annual sustaining capital and operational budget requests as well as requests for capital funding, as required
May represent the site on company sponsored steering teams related to geotechnical efforts
Perform other duties as assigned
Bachelor’s degree in Geotechnical Engineering or related Engineering discipline from an accredited curriculum, with courses in Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering and five (5) years of experience in an applicable field of expertise, OR
Master’s degree in Geotechnical Engineering or related Engineering discipline from an accredited curriculum, with courses in Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering and three (3) years of experience in an applicable field of expertise
Knowledge in the principles and practices of Civil, Geologic, Geotechnical, or Hydrologic Engineering or a related field of Science or Engineering
Knowledge of appropriate software (MS Office, AutoCAD) and Geotechnical data analysis
Certified Engineer-in-Training or equivalent
Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing to a diversely educated audience
Ability to develop and maintain awareness of occupational hazards and safety of yourself and others
Skilled in following safety practices and recognizing hazards','!*!Preferred
Master’s degree in Geotechnical Engineering
Two (2) years of work experience in Geotechnical Engineering
Experience with metal mining operations
Ability to understand and apply verbal and written work and safety-related instructions and procedures given in English
Ability to communicate in English with respect to job assignments, job procedures, and applicable safety standards
Must be able to work in a potentially stressful environment
Work is performed in a mine or manufacturing plant setting, which may include exposure to extremes in temperature and humidity, moving mechanical parts, risk of electrical shock, toxic chemicals, explosives, fumes or airborne particles
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, sit, demonstrate manual dexterity and work on elevated platforms
Occasionally may be required to lift moderately heavy objects (up to 30 pounds) during the course of the workday
Personal protective equipment is required when performing work in a mine, outdoor, manufacturing or plant environment, including hard hat, hearing protection, safety glasses, safety footwear, and as needed, respirator, rubber steel-toe boots, protective clothing, gloves and any other protective equipment as required
