Profile

Using the appropriate elicitation and documentation techniques, the Senior Business Analyst works with various stakeholders to define and validate solutions that meet business needs and organizational goals and objectives. Also, acts as a mentor to less experienced business analysts and provides direction and support for the PMO and project team.
Requirements Planning: For assigned projects the BA should demonstrate their Requirements Planning capability by identifying how they determined:
Who was contacted about requirements
How requirements were gathered
What other roles should be involved in requirements gathering and review
What tools were used to support the requirements gathering and review work
How his/her approach to planning contributed to project success
Requirements Gathering: For assigned projects, the BA should document how the BA successfully demonstrated one or more of the following requirements gathering techniques (and that the techniques used were appropriate to the project):
Interview
Observation
Analysis of current systems
Prototypes
JAD sessions
Use Cases
Questions/Survey
Historical Data
Requirements Analysis: For assigned projects, the BA should demonstrate their approach for Requirements Analysis (the process by which requirements are prioritized, verified and validated by Project Team members and Project Stakeholders). Requirements Analysis also includes determining the importance of the individual requirements in terms of the project constraints (cost, schedule, resources). Requirements Analysis can be quantified by answering the questions:
What is being solved with the business requirements?
Are the business requirements feasible?
What scope and/or objectives are the requirements addressing?
Organizing (documenting) requirements: For assigned projects, the BA should demonstrate that he/she ensures good requirements are captured in the requirements document. Requirements should be: unambiguous, understandable, correct, concise, traced, traceable, design independent, verifiable.
Validating Requirements: For assigned projects, the BA should demonstrate that Requirements Validation was performed. (Requirements validation ensures scope and objectives are valid and verifiable and business requirements and acceptance criteria are reviewed with customers and stakeholders.)
Traceability: For assigned projects, the BA should demonstrate Traceability for all requirements. Traceability can be demonstrated through a Requirements Matrix document, which ties all test cases to an originating requirement.
For both Requirements Validation and Traceability, the primary differentiator between BA and Sr. BA is project complexity, scope, and level of supervision/guidance.
Communication: For assigned projects, the BA should demonstrate the communication skills utilized. Because communications skills are required in every aspect of BA work, quality project documents can serve as one quantifiable measure. Documents such as the Requirements Document, Project Charter, Requirements Matrix, test cases and other project documents all provide insight into the BAs communication skills. The quality of the project requirements is a direct reflection of the BA’s listening, reading, and writing skills. Sr BA and BA capability levels are differentiated by project complexity and scope as well as presentation skills and audience.
Creative Problem Solving: For assigned projects, Sr. BA success can be measured by providing examples of project situations where he/she has been a key factor in issue resolution, risk identification and general solution guidance for the project team. Much of the creative thought process is required during Technical Design, in which the Sr. BA will play a critical role. BAs will participate or assist with Technical Design, but creative problem solving contributions are typically limited to the requirements gathering process. During the requirements gathering process, BAs will not be dictating solutions as much as documenting the business needs. Sr. BAs should be able to provide instances of mentoring BAs.
