Senior Prototype Lab Engineer
functions within the Prototype Team and performs the hands on maintenance of prototypes requiring firmware upgrades (BIOS,CPLD, remote access controllers, etc.), hardware upgrades (CPU’s, motherboards, memory, HBA’s, etc.), configuration of systems and switches, OS installs, resolution of boot issues and accurate record keeping of the engineering level of prototype machines including maintenance of detailed machine logs. This Prototype Lab Engineer position is embedded within the VMware TechOps Team but receives direction from the Engineering Prototype Program Manager.
The ideal candidate is highly motivated with a strong history of successful hardware bringup and problem resolution in a dynamic lab environment (A Systems Administrator with a strong emphasis on hardware for example). The candidate must be self directed in complimenting the work of other Prototype Team members in addition to working effectively with TechOps lab, R&D and QA teams.
Job Requirements:
· Extensive hardware bringup and debug of x86 server and desktop systems.
· Knowledge of x86 platform architecture including basic x86 architecture and bus architectures.
· Proven practical experience installing and configuring 32 and 64-bit operating systems including multiple Linux distributions and Microsoft Windows variants.
· Strong desire to execute responsibilities on the critical path supporting teams responsible for operating system kernel and feature development on aggressive first customer ship schedules.
Specific Duties:
· Hardware and software debug of engineering samples and pre-production hardware with detailed, step-by-step documentation of actions.
· CPU and associated firmware replacement and upgrades.
· Motherboard and associated firmware replacement and upgrades.
· Coordinate system deployment with multiple engineering groups.
· Update inventory-tracking system with details of equipment received, deployed and upgraded.
· Provide frequent and detailed information regarding host bring-up process, issues encountered and resolution.
· Attend joint meetings led by other engineering groups to coordinate priority of activities.
· Rapidly adjust in the critical path to emerging and shifting priorities.
· Professionally maintain VMware Partner specific confidential information preventing any breach of Partner trust.
