This position will support research and development in solventborne automotive coatings, including clearcoats, basecoats, and primers. The research chemist/research associate will work in a formulations laboratory under the supervision of the group leader. The incumbent will plan, conduct and direct core research and test drills for the development of new and innovative automotive coating technologies while maintaining a focus on generating new intellectual property that can benefit PPG across multiple end-use markets. Responsibilities include leading one or more gated projects and identifying new technology opportunities through literature searches, technical scouting, competitive analysis and intellectual property review.
Direct the lab activities of at least one technician, technologist, chemist, and/or engineer, and broadly support the training and development of employees.
Direct and actively participate in paint formulation, spray application and physical property testing of standard and experimental primers, basecoats, and clearcoats.
Develop and test new ideas that improve coating properties and appearance, meet regulatory requirements, address unmet market needs, or improve the efficiencies of existing products and processes.
Regularly communicate results through coatings reports, test drill presentations, and experimental summaries; support with Six Sigma-type statistical tools for experimental design and analysis.
Establish consistent interactions with product management and business leaders to maintain project alignment and resource allocation.
Network effectively and collaborate with other scientists and engineers across R&D, manufacturing, academia and industry; actively pursue sharing of knowledge and technical collaboration across strategic business units.
Build awareness of emerging business trends and create new formulations to address them.
Develop and maintain intellectual property assets; develop sound research project proposals leading to the successful launch of approved projects.

Ph.D. in a technical field such as Chemistry, Polymer Science, Coatings Science, Materials Science, Physics or Chemical Engineering and 3-5 years of relevant industrial and supervisory experience is preferred. Previous coating formulation experience and demonstrated commercial success is desirable, as is experience with external customer interactions and presenting to diverse audiences.
