Job Posting Title Senior Engineer - Headend/Server- Downingtown, PA Start Date 07/31/2009 Reference Code 3fd9734a-c20e-c016-e100-000018282f0d Job Title Senior Engineer - Headend/Server- Downingtown, PA Division/Entity 50039591 Tasks This employee will be responsible for the installation and maintenance of test environments for QA engineers, and the configuration and maintenance of headend controllers. He or she will be required to build RF distribution systems, build IP communication networks, and configure and support the QA engineers’ test devices and tools. Each environment consists of different specifications, necessitating the ability to adapt to changing requirements and new technology. This employee will also be required to assist in the selection, installation, and support of desktop applications and hardware QA engineers require for testing. Responsibilities: • Installation and maintenance of all test environments. Environment components include PC software, RF networks, lab servers, and IP network components • Configuration and maintenance of Motorola and Cisco (Scientific Atlanta) headend controllers and related headend equipment. • Installation, maintenance, and documentation of controller delivered software code objects • Overseeing controller installations and collaborating with installers for smooth exchange of documentation, best practices, and configuration methods • Documentation and configuration of CRAN supplied video sources and channel maps • Installation of software on Windows and Linux machines • Cabling new RF cable runs and power and quality measurements of RF signals • Identifying test and measurement gaps and knowledge of the tools needed to fill them • Documenting environment and processes • Create and maintain headend design documentation of headend systems to include floor plans, wiring diagrams and rack elevations of active and passive fiber optic, network and RF equipment for each headend and OTN location. • Perform bug verification, development and testing on reported issues • General lab maintenance • Organizing shipments • Tracking of assets and equipment inventories • Provide back up for department leads • Create as-builds designs of existing headend related equipment. • Revise and update current headend designs based on input from various internal **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***. engineering staff on future RF, Optic, VOD, HSD, CDV and other future services requirements. • Provide a Bill of Material for headend equipment required to meet future requirements. • Assist Area Project Management in assembly, coordinating and finalization of BOM and associated labor (cost estimator) for area related projects. • Maintain a current library of headend design documentation, and to provide headend design documentation to Engineering and technical as requested. • Research and specify headend equipment for cable, fiber and telephony systems. • Provide reports on a weekly basis of all headend design activity. • Coordinates activities between departments to ensure continuous business operation.
Requirements Technical Requirements • Linux, Unix, and Windows XP Operating Systems • Strong proficiency with the Motorola DAC and Cisco (SA) DNCS • Strong experience configuring and maintaining Motorola and Cisco (SA) headend equipment • Strong headend skills including RF cabling, signal measurement, and distribution • Strong knowledge of IP networks • Ability to design diagrams and write documents using MS Visio and other document authoring software • Knowledge of software development life cycle and test process and design skills • Working knowledge of and practical application of software development best practices • Proficiency with defect tracking software such as Bugzilla, Test Director and Adminitrack • Familiarity with development environments, build systems and configuration management tools, such as CVS • Integration experience with embedded applications, preferably related to the cable industry Skills • Ability to troubleshoot an issue, identify the root cause and determine ownership of problems. Ability to validate issues written by others. • Ability to analyze integration points of the product and produce functional tests for those points • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks for efficient work output • Ability to participate in defining overall approach and structure (test architecture / design) for automated and/or black box testing • Ability to clearly and concisely describe problems in both written and oral forms and communicate both orally and in writing in a clear, professional and pleasant manner. • Must be willing to accept additional assignments and take the lead and assist other team members as necessary. • Ability to work autonomously without close supervision or assistance • Self-motivated with desire for continuous learning • Ability to present and digest concepts quickly and multitask • Adapt to changing priorities Education/Experience • Bachelors in Computer Science, Engineering, Math, or equivalent job related experience/knowledge as determined by management. • 5+ years of applicable job related experience in the cable or satellite industry • Experience with Interactive Program Guides and associated features is highly desired • Knowledge of the cable television industry and related technology • 5+ years in the design of RF, optic and network headend systems utilizing Visio and/or AutoCAD design software. Major emphasis on Visio software
