The state of Oregon saw a jump in its unemployment rate, from 5.9% in July to 6.5% in August. The increase brings the state’s jobless rate to its highest level since January 2005, when it was at 6.5%. Unemployment was at a low of five percent between February and April 2007.
Data on jobs in Oregon shows that nonfarm payroll jobs fell by 7,400 in August, after a gain of 5,200 jobs in July. Major sectors that saw job losses include
construction, trade,
transportation and utilities, and business services.
On the upside,
education and health services saw an increase in nearly 700 jobs as the only major sectors with job increases.
During the month of August, the US unemployment rate rose from 5.7% to 6.1%.
