Pasadena, CA — The House of Representatives has passed a bill on extending unemployment benefits for people unemployed for more than six months. But the Senate still has to pass the bill and since it is in recess, the bill is on hold till July 12.
The Labor Department has reported that the initial jobless benefits claims have risen to 472,000 last week, an increase of 13,000 from the previous week. The Senate's failure to pass the bill also means that over 1.3 million unemployed people will not be getting their unemployment benefits reinstated before Congress goes on a weeklong break for Independence Day. The benefits are of around $300 per week.
Throughout the country, the local media is reporting stories of laid-off workers, most of them in their 40s and 50s with families, struggling to make their ends meet. The story remains the same – the people in the interviews have applied everywhere but cannot seem to get a break. In response to this, EmploymentCrossing CEO, A. Harrison Barnes says that job creation is still happening in the private sector throughout the country. ''I know nobody likes a handout and people are looking, but they need to be looking in the right place and be flexible, whether it's the pay, location or type of work. If you do that, finding a job will be a little easier.''
The reason EmploymentCrossing has been able to list so many jobs is that the company keeps researching not just job boards but employer sites as well for any openings and has aggregated them in a single database. EmploymentCrossing is a job aggregator and has been able to compile almost 300,000 jobs in the last seven days alone.
The sectors, per the EmploymentCrossing job collection, with the highest number of new openings this week are: healthcare (86,130), engineering (19,874), managerial (41,720), sales (32,046), and information technology (30,391).
