Pasadena, CA — Initial jobless claims for unemployment benefits dropped by 21,000 to 454,000 in the last week, which were the lowest in two months. Analysts had expected the figure to decline to 460,000. The data is from the Department of Labor. This news drove up the stock market for a third straight day of gains.
But these numbers are not big enough to make any significant improvement in the unemployment situation, where the unemployment rate is still 9.5 percent. The states reporting the largest increases in initial jobless claims were: New Jersey (7,951), Massachusetts (4,681), New York (3,473) and Florida (2,838). There were also major states reporting a decline in initial jobless claims. They are: Pennsylvania (2,841), Tennessee (1,375) Illinois (1,346).
EmploymentCrossing CEO, A. Harrison Barnes says that this shows job creation is picking up. ''The numbers may seem small, but our site alone has been able to track down almost 391,000 jobs.'' EmploymentCrossing is a job aggregator site.
The reason EmploymentCrossing has been able to list so many jobs is that the company keeps researching not just job boards but employer sites as well for any openings and has aggregated them in a single database.
The sectors, per the EmploymentCrossing job collection, with high numbers of new openings this week are: healthcare (120,135), engineering (20,783), managerial (58,157), sales (43,354), and information technology (35,539).
