Pasadena, CA — Nevada's unemployment rate, already the highest in the country, went up in June to 14.2 percent. The state has seen unemployment rise throughout the state. There are 193,000 people in Nevada looking for work.
Analysts following the state's economic performance feel that the main factor to watch out for job growth and retention is the tourist flow. The hardest hit is the Las Vegas metro area, where two-thirds of the state's population lives. The unemployment rate for the region was 14.5 percent.
The sectors where there was some hiring were trade, transportation, and the utilities companies. They added around 2,000 jobs. The healthcare and education sectors also added 2,100 jobs. But the seasonal construction industry lost 2,400 jobs because of most projects winding up. The state and local government also lost 4,800 jobs, most of which were temporary census jobs.
In spite of the job losses across the board, EmploymentCrossing, a job aggregator site, was able to compile a list of 12,000 jobs across the state. The main sectors, per the EmploymentCrossing job collection, with high numbers of new openings this week are: healthcare (4,518), nursing (1,644), managerial (1,578), various blue-collar jobs (1,125), and information technology (429).
