Pasadena, CA — California lost over 10,500 TV and film production jobs and indirectly another 25,000 jobs from 1997 to 2008. 2008 was the last year for which federal and state data related to the industry was available. This analysis was released by The Milken Institute in a report called ''Film Flight''.
The report states that in spite of offering incentives for the entertainment industry, the state lost jobs because companies also got incentives from other states and countries, plus cheaper locations and crews. As a result, California's share of film and TV production output has also been steadily declining since 1997.
In the last few years, incentives have been successful to some extent, an analysis of production day tallies showed. EmploymentCrossing CEO, A. Harrison Barnes has a different take on this situation. ''If you have lost a job in the movie or TV industry and that's where your passion is then you should move to where the work is. There are opportunities all over the country.'' Barnes's job aggregator website has been able to find over 2,000 TV production jobs throughout the country.
