EmploymentCrossing.com Finds 2.19 Million Job Openings as Jobless Claims Fall More than Expected

Pasadena, CA - The latest jobs data released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that the seasonally adjusted initial jobless claims for the week ending May 18 stood at 340,000. This is a decrease of 23,000 from the previous week’s revised figure of initial jobless claims, which stood at 363,000.

Job aggregator website EmploymentCrossing.com has also been able to track down 2.19 million job openings. The fall in initial jobless claims was more than expected, as various media organizations reported on the story with upbeat headlines.

CEO Harrison Barnes of EmploymentCrossing.com explains the huge number of jobs listed on the site when compared to the initial jobless claims figures. “We try to locate job openings from every possible source, and that is why we are able to maintain around 2 million job openings listed on our site throughout the year.”

Barnes adds, “A fall in the initial jobless claims rate is always good news since this means that Americans are having an easier time getting other jobs.”

California continues to be number one state in terms of job opportunities with the site tracking down 228,000 job openings in the state. Texas comes second with 175,000 job openings while New York is third with 123,000 job openings.

The top industries in terms of job openings for the week ending May 24, according to the site’s database are as follows:

Healthcare - 358,000 job openings

Customer Service - 351,000 job openings

Sales - 224,000 job openings

Information Technology - 220,000 job openings

Retail - 196,000 job openings

Engineering - 139,000 job openings

Hospitality - 137,000 job openings

Financial Services - 124,000 job openings

Nursing- 121,000 job openings

Accounting- 114,000 job openings
