AT&T to Cut Jobs

By katie  |  Dated: 12-03-2012

AT&T is a company that most people are familiar with. The company is a fairly well known provider of landline and mobile phone services. Sadly the company is getting ready to get rid of some of its workers in order to put its balance sheet to right. The company has decided to cut back on about 106 workers in the state of Connecticut in what qualifies as a mass layoff action. For those of you who are not familiar with the idea of a mass layoff action here is a look at how the company chooses to describe itself, “The Mass Layoff Statistics (MLS) program collects reports on mass layoff actions that result in workers being separated from their jobs. Monthly mass layoff numbers are from establishments which have at least 50 initial claims for unemployment insurance (UI) filed against them during a 5-week period. Extended mass layoff numbers (issued quarterly) are from a subset of such establishments—where private sector nonfarm employers indicate that 50 or more workers were separated from their jobs for at least 31 days.”

The company has outlined the job cuts in some details. The jobs to be cut will include 76 workers that are currently employed as landline technicians. The rest of the jobs to be cut will come from workers in the marketing department.

The company’s most recent press release highlighted not the job changes, but the newest device that they are selling to the public in the near future, “Beginning Dec. 14, AT&T* customers looking for a tough phone that stands up to the elements will have one more choice with the Samsung Rugby® III for $99.99 with a two-year agreement. With a two-year Enhanced Push-to-Talk contract, organizations can pick up the device for free. This rugged flip phone is the fifth generation device in the Rugby series from Samsung and is compatible with AT&T’s Enhanced Push to Talk (PTT) service, which enables business users to communicate faster, to larger talk groups, and across more types of handsets than ever before. On Nov. 30, business customers with an AT&T account will be able to pre-order the Rugby III through their AT&T account lead or through their Premier online account: www.wireless.att.com/business. With a two-year Enhanced PTT contract, organizations can pick up the device for free.”

The company is also getting politically active, in a statement AT&T Chairman and CEO Randall Stephenson, said the following about the current political situation, “”Following a meeting this week with the President, as well as conversations with Congressional leaders, I am more convinced than ever that a budget deal to avoid the ‘fiscal cliff’ must and can be found. This will require a compromise involving an increase in both tax rates and revenue in return for real and significant steps to reform entitlements and rein in federal spending. Now is the time for our nation’s leaders to put aside partisan or philosophical differences and act for the good of the country as a whole. Failure to address this will result in severe market disruptions, a return to negative economic growth, and businesses pulling in investment. This can and must be avoided. It is no exaggeration to say that the future economic well-being of all Americans is riding on the outcome.”
