The challenges for creativity, high earnings, glamour, and travel in advertising and marketing remain its main attractions for individuals who want to get into this coveted job.

But applicants who are most interested must be prepared with the stress and the long hours of work, often stretching to over forty-hour weeks, with weekends and evenings when deadlines are set. Companies these days, however, are including health-related activities and time-management trainings to help out the people work around their output without sacrificing the quality of their work.

Advertisement work involves the creative process in communication to build an image and project a story or thought through various forms of communication media such as in newspapers, magazines, television and radio broadcast, billboards, banners, and other materials. Most advertising companies have their specialization in advertising and marketing media. Some would focus on radio and television communication materials, while others choose to go for outdoor materials such as electric displays and billboards. Others would specialize in producing materials specifically for transport units and public transport areas where human traffic is often concentrated, varied, and unrestricted. Examples of these are buses, taxis, subways, bus terminals, and airports. A few would go into aerial advertising while some advertising companies focus on producing handbills, free samples, and circulars.

An advertisement job gets more creative and exciting with the inclusion of the worldwide web as an effective advertising channel. This new advertising site is increasingly becoming popular because of the rapid growth of Internet users. The flexibility of the Internet allows advertisers to maximize the exposure needs of their clients by linking users to company websites where more information on the product or service can be accessed and direct purchases is already possible.

For commercial companies, the goal is often about selling a product or service and boosting profit on a long-term goal. For other organizations or companies, it may be more specific in areas of concern such as health, environment, political, or social campaigns or promotions. The effectiveness of such campaigns or promotions often relies on the concept or idea being projected through an advertisement job. This is why the demand and pressures for creativity, innovation, and flexibility is high for people in this industry.

Advertising companies buy the space or airtime in media facilities such as radio and television for their advertisement work. In turn, the advertising firms seek out or are approached by companies and organizations who ask for their advertising and marketing services. The creative process initially takes place with the presentation of an advertisement plan through images and discussions. When the two parties agree, the rest of the creative team joins in to complete the advertising work on a given timeline. Researchers, designers, planners, production and creative people, and media work as one team to meet the client's goal.

While competition for advertisement employment is high, an applicant in this industry would do well with a bachelor's degree particularly with exposure to broad liberal arts. Entry-level professionals usually begin their exposure in the media department or account management, while those who already acquired an experience are taken in the creative or market research departments. But a bachelor's degree is not necessary for applicants in the entry-level of the creative department, while assistant art directors are usually required a minimum 2-year art or design school degree. On the other hand, a copywriter is not required to come up with a degree, but having one especially in a communications-related course will boost his or her chances at making good at this specific advertisement occupation. A bachelor's degree with focus on marketing or advertising is also expected for entry levels for an assistant media planner.

Research positions are suitable for applicants with acquired years of experience, a master's degree, or a marketing or statistics background. Administrative positions and support services require varied academic backgrounds or experiences depending on the company or agency applied in. Generally, courses in marketing, accounting, psychology, statistics, marketing, and creative design as well as advertising-related internship are considered advantages for any applicant interested in advertisement work.

Advertisement employment works are largely concentrated in big cities or metropolitan areas such as New York and California where 19 percent of these advertising firms and companies and 28 percent of the total industry workers are found.
