General Summary: This position is responsible for the development of consistent, accurate, and timely manual rates for prospects, renewals and NBOC for all group lines. This position supports the evaluation and selection of risk and establishment of premium levels which ensure profitable acquisition of new cases and the continued profitable retention of inforce cases through the manual rates. This position’s primary accountability is to screen contracts to determine the proper plan design and census manipulation to be used for the manual rate. The quality, accuracy, and reasonableness of the manual rate will serve as the foundation for accurate risk assessment and ultimate quote rate decisions that follow. This requires a strong partnership with Underwriters and team mates to ensure that all data needs are met, that work hand-offs are effectively communicated and that due dates are managed. In addition to the primary responsibility in supporting Integrated Underwriting, this position is responsible for providing support to Core Underwriters in manual rating for exception processing. Prospects
Understand rating process and plan design elements Review, extract, and analyze plan design/benefit information from competitor contracts including non-standard pricing items in order to generate an accurate manual rate Utilize critical thinking skills to be able to make appropriate assumptions in order to present first pass manual rates to the Underwriter  Ensure accurate preparation of census data using Word and Excel Determine plan design and ratability of the plan relative to the census provided Utilize the UWRC for updates to rate effective dates, occupational codes, or manual rating adjustments. With special attention to specifics for example in CA, FL or NY. Take initiative to provide Underwriter with alternate plans foreseen as viable options Support rating of inforce and alternate plan designs Ensure accuracy of manual rate through the manual rate reasonableness checklist Renewals and Projections
Partner with the Underwriter to determine the timeline and reports required
Determine plan design elements and rating process to be used for manual rating Run reports from various systems, gathering information for the renewal Customer Service
Provide clear and complete documentation of assumptions/best estimates made in the instance of missing data and system limitations requiring alterations to the requested plan designs Manage workload and time to meet deadlines, partnering with other locations Negotiate reasonable timeframes with Underwriters Building comfort in the shifting workloads amongst peers while meeting aggressive  deadlines and high workload levels Take initiative to ask questions when appropriate to ensure clear understanding Identify process improvements and provide solution recommendations Training and Projects
Work on Business Initiatives as assigned by  Manager Provide subject matter expert support to the training area – Roll up gap training needs when identified, update/write accurate procedures, job aids, and templates for the UW Resource Center   Assist with training for new Underwriting Specialists, refresher training for incumbents, and support job shadows as needed Develop ongoing rating expertise, through working relationships with Underwriter and through formal training
