About the Opportunity

This is an open position with the FirstEnergy Utilities, a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp. [FEU]

FirstEnergy seeks a self-motivated intern with a desire to learn new and proprietary systems, with a strong desire to dig deep into unfamiliar territory

Position may be located in either Akron, OH or Fairmont, WV.

The primary accountabilities of this internship include design, development, and support of Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) and grid monitoring tools used as part of FirstEnergy’s Energy Management System (EMS).

Based on your discipline you may participate in the following functions in support of the Energy Management System:

Design, build, and enhance FirstEnergy’s EMS to provide tools for situational awareness of electrical system conditions

Maintain user interface tools to facilitate monitoring and control of power system components

Assist with administration, maintenance, and upgrades of software

Perform power system equipment commissioning activities

Support Energy Delivery system operators and engineers in the use of the EMS

Perform data analysis and create reports, scorecards, and historical trends

Develop and communicate system documentation, version release notes, and training material

As a FirstEnergy Intern you will also be expected to:

Fully participate in the FirstEnergy Co-Op/Intern program mandatory events

Utilize knowledge, skills and abilities to work on challenging assignments and contribute to FirstEnergy’s success

Gain understanding of the electric utility business and seize the opportunity to explore potential career paths at FirstEnergy

Engage in candidate self-assessments and use supervisory feedback to improve your performance

Develop career contacts and receive guidance from coaches and peers

Network with other students

Present to department members and leadership at the end of each session/rotation to highlight projects and contributions.

Qualifications

Must be enrolled in a 4 (four) year accredited college / university with a major in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field

Maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0

Must have the ability to work without sponsorship (now or in the future)

Strong knowledge of MS Office tools (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)

Must work effectively in a team environment and on concurrent assignments

Strong technical writing skills

Ability to commit to a minimum of two (2) intern sessions. Spring, Summer or Fall

Must be willing to relocate to / reside near the job location for the duration of the assignment (some candidates may be eligible for a living stipend)

Successful completion of basic engineering and/or computer science coursework

Positive communication skills (verbal and written) as well as organizational skills to prioritize and plan work, multi-task and meet project deadlines
