Product Development Engineer/Scientist
This engineer/scientist drives adhesive tape product design and development activities for both new and sustaining programs. Responsibilities include solution development, feasibility assessment, prototype development and assessment, manufacturing scale up, and meeting product release date plans. Will work closely with other development scientist, product managers, and operations engineers to ensure specifications are met with cost effective and technically strong solutions.
Primary Job Functions
As a member of the R&D group, the development engineer/scientist will have the following primary responsibilities:
Design and development of pressure sensitive adhesive tapes from concept creation to launch
Support current business through product and process improvement programs
Provide technical support to commercial and manufacturing teams through specification tests, product qualifications and recommendations
Broad use of polymer science and engineering principles to solve product and production challenges
Design and conduct experiments to validate product performance
Interact with manufacturing personnel to optimize product design for ease of manufacturing
Office/Meetings and Lab/Pilot-Plant/Production time allocation expected to be around 50:50
Develop good working knowledge of adhesive, resin and additive suppliers and their capabilities
Other responsibilities as assigned
Fundamental understanding of technologies associated with design and manufacturing of pressure sensitive adhesive tapes
Strong formulation knowledge (3 years) in natural and synthetic rubber based adhesive formulation and additive chemistries including physical and analytical characterization
Excellent analytical skills
Strong planning/organizing skills
Ability to effectively communicate/present findings to a wide variety of audiences
Knowledge and use of Six Sigma tools for analyzing data (MINITAB a plus)
Self-starter and ability to work independently as needed
Hands-on experience with continuous web based manufacturing a plus
Hands-on laboratory and pilot facility experience a plus
Education, Experience, Skills
B.S. / M.S. Degree in Chemistry or Polymer Science/Engineering
Experience working with R&D testing equipment
Experience formulating and testing PSA adhesives and tapes a plus
