The Product Support Engineering Group in the PPG Aerospace Transparencies Group provides the design direction, technical specifications and direction for developing new products and materials.  Additionally it provides input to the development of new process technology, improvements to existing products and process technologies and provides both internal and external technical support. 

     The primary responsibilities of the Product Support Engineer includes the evaluation and quantification of field performance for new and existing products and providing  the technical manuals, data, product technical literature and presentations to support marketing activity, as well as  determination of cause and the resolution of field performance issues. 

   

Requires - The position requires a minimum of a BS degree in Aerospace, Electrical, Chemical or Mechanical engineering or in a related field of study.  Fairly good understanding of statistics and keen eye to determine root cause for failure is desirable.  Need 2-4 years aerospace experience or experience related to reliability engineering and customer liaison. The incumbent must possess good oral and written communication skills for publish/writing reports, frequent contact with customers, the technical community and within PPG at both technical and management levels.  The incumbent must have the ability to work well with people at various organizational levels and demonstrated leadership ability.  Frequent travel, including international travel, is required.

 

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES   (Major end results, i.e., what has to be achieved and why.  Do not describe activities. Start with the most important. Number each one. A maximum of eight [8])

 

1.      Safety, Health, and Environment - Assure that new product development includes attention to all safety, ergonomics, health, and environment requirements for both manufacturing and product use.  Assure that all regulatory requirements for the support of new and existing products are met.

2.  Quality/Customer Satisfaction- Develop and execute laboratory and field evaluation programs that assess product performance and define how well products are meeting customer expectations and competitive threats.  Provide required technical support for the establishment of unique marketing and/or distribution programs.

3.  Cost/Profitability - Using data and analyses of AP warranty costs and Field Performance data obtained from customers, direct and coordinate the actions of AP technical resources in the definition and reduction or elimination of field service problems. Provide technical support for the introduction of new products.

4. Technical Communication - Provide the required technical manuals and data for the support of existing programs as well as determining and responding to the product support requirements for new programs and products. Provide technical marketing literature and presentations to support sales and marketing activity. Develop technical communications that provide customers with information required for the maintenance of our products. Provide responses to customer inquiries and technical questions and provide technical support as required to the operators on products that PPG has direct sales rights.

5. Personal Growth - Establish and maintain positive and effective personal and organizational relationships with Design, Glass Business Development Center, Program Management, Sales, and Manufacturing personnel. Ensure professional growth and development for managerial effectiveness in all accountability areas through involvement in appropriate on and off the job activities.

The PPG Aerospace Transparencies Product Design, Development & Support engineering department is comprised of 12 – 15 Product Design Engineers, 6 – 10 Program Managers, 4 – 8 Aftermarket Product Support Engineers and 6 – 8 Launch and Development Engineers supporting an Aerospace Transparencies business unit.

PPG Aerospace Transparency’s Group produces and markets over 1400 different glass, plastic and composite transparency designs as well as a variety of components and related products in three different manufacturing facilities supporting Commercial, Military, General Aviation and Specialty Armored markets. These products are sold to Aircraft OEMs, airline Operators and end users throughout the world.

The Product Support Engineering Group in the PPG Aerospace Transparencies Group provides the design direction, technical specifications and direction for developing new products and materials.  Additionally it provides input to the development of new process technology, improvements to existing products and process technologies and provides both internal and external Technical support. 

The primary responsibilities of the Product Support Engineer includes the evaluation and quantification of field performance for new and existing products and providing  the technical manuals, data, product technical literature and presentations to support marketing activity, as well as  determination of cause and the resolution of field performance issues. 

The Product Support Engineer will develop customer relationships that foster acquisition of the necessary data to define product reliability.  This includes gathering available statistics from the airlines and OEM's, defining and conducting field product evaluations, defining and conducting product test and developing innovative means to capture and quantify performance data.

The Product Support Engineer will be responsible for defining and coordinating the technical resources of Aircraft Products in the resolution of field service issues. This will include regular and effective interface with customers (both OEMs and End Users), AP’s Design, Test, Quality, Process and Manufacturing Engineering Groups, Glass Business Development Center personnel and the Sales and Marketing Group. Successful resolution of field service problems or product improvement programs by the Product Support Engineer will include the coordination and direction of required PPG technical resources to minimize the cost and disruption to AP while providing the customer with effective and timely resolution of field service problems.

The Product Support Engineer will be responsible for compiling the necessary technical documentation for field support of AP products.  This includes such literature as Maintenance Manual chapters, Service Letters, and Bulletins and Product Performance Data Sheets. Additionally, the Product Support Engineer will establish customer training programs in recommended product maintenance practices. The incumbent will serve as an active participant in technical societies, technical seminars and AP technical activities such as the International Transparency Conference and internal PPG training.  Necessary customer training activities will be developed and implemented by the incumbent.

The Product Support Engineer will provide continuous improvement for the department’s environmental, health and safety, quality and value performance to insure an injury free work place, 100% compliance to customer satisfaction while meeting plant profitability objectives and from time to time will participate on safety, quality and value improvement teams.

In all of these activities the incumbent must maintain close coordination with Sales, Design and Manufacturing Engineering, and personnel at the Glass Technology Center. The incumbent must maintain extensive awareness of Aircraft Products' research, sales & marketing, and manufacturing strategies in order to define product support strategies that support business unit goals. The incumbent must also work with personnel throughout the business unit to develop and implement product support programs that will achieve AP goals.

This position follows the PPG Engineering Hierarchy levels of promotion.
