Scientist / Senior Scientist, New Technologies

This position will support the development of new platforms, technologies, and products to the marketplace. As a support to the corporate strategy, the Scientist / Senior Scientist will be responsible for implementation of the Innovation Strategy with the formulation, development and technical transfer/scale-up of platforms and products for Swiss American’s business needs.

Under the direction of the Director, New Technologies, the Scientist / Senior Scientist will contribute in the building of the pipeline strategy and ideation of individual innovation projects and most directly develop processes and products to execute on that strategy.

This position requires collaboration with cross functional partners including Operations, Quality Assurance, and Research and Development (R&D) to ensure successful new product launches.

The Scientist / Senior Scientist, New Technologies has four primary responsibilities:

Remain current on science, trends and differentiating innovations in the market.

This includes, but is not limited to: formulation science, materials/ingredients/technologies, compounding equipment and cost.

Support R&D chemists to develop robust products and the scale-up of products on the basis of platform science for corporate-branded lines as well as for CDMO customers.

Assist R&D Leadership to develop appropriate policies and procedures that will guide controlled and risk-mitigating activities across the R&D function in its support of corporate strategy, corporate brands, and CDMO customers.

Lead R&D process development (scale-up) of new product / new technologies during hand-off from R&D lab to R&D Pilot / Trial batches.

Detailed Responsibilities:

Execute the technical aspects of projects, interacts with cross-functional teams to implement timely new product introductions.

Prepare laboratory batches for stability sampling, preservative efficacy testing, claim/clinical testing, mock-ups and R&D leadership evaluation.

Interface with R&D, Operations, and Quality team for formula scale-up and process development to ensure successful commercialization of new technologies and products.

Attend Pilots and Trials for new product introduction

Prepare process development/process scale-up documentation

Develop process specifications for new product launches.

Troubleshoot product or process failures to determine the cause and implement corrective action.

Hand-off process of new products to process validation team and provide direction of Critical Process Parameters (CPPs).

Work with limited supervision to drive technical resolutions in manufacturing and troubleshoot product issues under aggressive and sometimes compressed timelines.

Maintain pace with and understanding of the innovative ingredients and technologies with which product development will be based.

Formulate a variety of personal care products, cosmetics, medical devices and OTC products from concept to finished good.

Skills & Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree and a minimum of 3 years of professional experience is required.

Graduate/ Terminal degree in a Chemical Engineering, Industrial Pharmacy, or other science or engineering discipline is preferred.

Process development/process scale-up experience is required.

Ability to work cross-functionally in a team environment while being an individual contributor is required.

Some experience with consumer products, such as skin care, skin cleansers, and/or deodorant products is highly preferred.

A technical foundation formulating products including emulsions, surfactants, suspensions, structured liquids and an understanding of material chemistry is preferred.

Experience working with external manufacturing and technical project management is preferred.

Familiarity with cGMP and other regulatory requirements is preferred.

Familiar with FDA process scale-up and validation requirements is required.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Must be able to work independently and with broad management style to create an inclusive, innovative, communicative, and respectful culture with an appreciation for diversity.

Computer Skills:

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Microsoft Office Business Suite and Internet software. Knowledge of formulation software is a plus.
