Job Description

SCOPE:

The Veterinary is responsible for clinical oversight of the veterinary center at an on-site residential facility. This position is responsible for ensuring contractual requirements and client expectations are met at the on-site residential facility.

**This position is notional and contingent upon contract award**

LOCATION:

This position will be located in the Eastern Caribbean.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Perform and/or provide direction and support for the following services:

Examine animals to detect nature of diseases or injuries.

Treat sick or injured animals by prescribing medication, setting bones, dressing wounds.

Inoculate animals against various diseases such as rabies and distemper.

Collect body tissue, feces, blood, urine, or other body fluids for examination and analysis.

Operate diagnostic equipment such as radiographic and ultrasound equipment, and interpret the resulting images.

Advise handlers regarding sanitary, feeding, and general care necessary to promote health of animals.

Educate handlers/trainers about diseases that can be spread from animals to humans.

Train and supervise workers who handle and care for animals.

Establish and conduct quarantine and testing procedures that prevent the spread of diseases to other animals or to humans, and that comply with applicable government regulations.

Perform administrative duties such as scheduling appointments and maintaining records.

Inspect and test animals to detect the presence of communicable diseases.

Inspect animal housing to determine cleanliness, adequacy and temperature control.

Work effectively independently, however be capable to give medical advice telephonically to a staff of Veterinarian Technicians that are operating at remote locations.

Other duties and projects as assigned.

Required Skills

QUALIFICATIONS:

Degree from a 4 year program at an accredited college of veterinary medicine.

Licensed as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (D.V.M. or V.M.D.).

2 years of experience as a veterinarian in a private practice or the military.

2 years of experience with animal tracking systems.

Proficiency with computer and common office equipment, as well as with MS Office products.

Knowledge of chemical composition, structure, and properties of substances and of the chemical processes and transformations that they undergo (this includes uses of chemicals and their interactions, danger signs, production techniques, and disposal methods).

Knowledge of plant and animal organisms, their tissues, cells, functions, inter-dependencies, and interactions with each other and the environment.

Immediate, last-minute travel within the U.S. may be required if located outside of shelter location.

Able to multi-task, be detail-oriented, be organized and have excellent verbal and communication skills.

Must have a current U.S. Passport.

Performs duties in a safe manner. Follows the corporate safety policy.

Maintains a clean and orderly work area.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.

Visual acuity required to complete paperwork and computer work.

Able to communicate verbally and listen for constant surveillance of staff activities.

Able to withstand changing environmental conditions with weather (rain, lightning, and winds).

Due to the conditions, must be able to manipulate around uneven terrain without assistance, able to ascend and descend stairs.

Able to adapt to conditions with little or no public utilities, including power and water.
