Patent Counsel

Duties: Providing clear, reasoned counsel on patent strategy and procurement to clients throughout the Company in all phases of drug research, development, and commercialization. Developing in-depth understanding in particular areas of neurology to bridge the science to patent law issues and communicate the impact to research and development and other business stakeholders. Rendering legal analysis and providing guidance concerning issues of patentability, validity, and freedom-to-operate, including prior art searching and analysis. Assisting in due diligence investigations and analyses of potential collaborations or new business opportunities (including freedom-to-operate, infringement and validity analyses). Preparing and prosecuting patent applications with a primary focus on the protection of inventions and patent prosecution relating to small molecule therapeutics,. Managing Docket. Manage and guide prosecution of a global docket, with emphasis on handling U.S. and European patent applications, as well as post-grant proceedings (e.g., reexamination, reissue, post-grant review), including foreign oppositions and appeals, as they may arise. Preparing patent status and progress reports for senior management. Maintenance of an internal patent filings database (but not day-to-day docketing). Collaborating, Managing, & Supporting Teams. Provide IP support to corporate and transactional legal colleagues. Support IPR and litigation counsel on IP-related matters as needed. Direct and manage outside counsel, including planning and budgeting. Collaborate with R&D, regulatory, commercial and business development colleagues on IP matters as part of cross-functional teams. Review and attend publication committee meetings and review proposed publications and public presentations prior to release.
