The Clooney Foundation for Justice (CFJ) is seeking a TrialWatch Associate Program Manager.  The incumbent will be principally responsible for driving the development of TrialWatch rapid response units on women and girls and journalists.  They will also assist in devising and implementing advocacy strategies and contribute across the board to TrialWatch research and outreach lines of effort.

CFJ advocates for justice through accountability for human rights abuses around the world.

TrialWatch is an initiative focused on monitoring and responding to trials around the world that pose a high risk of human rights violations. TrialWatch aims to be the first comprehensive global program scrutinizing criminal trials around the world. CFJ will recruit and train trial monitors, including non-lawyers, who can observe and report on criminal trials around the world, and use a specialized app to record the proceedings. The Clooney Foundation for Justice will then work to expose injustice and rally support to secure justice for defendants whose rights have been violated. For each trial monitored, CFJ will work with an eminent legal expert to produce a Fairness Report assessing and grading the fairness of the trial against human rights standards, and, where appropriate, advocate to vindicate the rights of victims in regional or international human rights courts. Ultimately, the data that is gathered will populate a global justice index that measures states’ performance in this area.

TrialWatch is focused on trials involving journalists, LGBTQ persons, women and girls, religious minorities, and human rights defenders.  In particular, TrialWatch is scaling up its capacity to monitor trials involving women and girls and journalists by building rapid response units to cover each of those groups of defendants.

The incumbent’s specific responsibilities will include:

  • Under the supervision of the Senior Program Manager, driving the development of rapid response units focused on trials involving women and girls and journalists.
  • Undertaking related research and liaising with potential partners and other stakeholders.
  • Assisting in the development and implementation of tailored advocacy strategies around judicial proceedings we are monitoring around the world to drive systematic change and advance norms related to fair trial rights (including but not limited to trials covered by the women and girls and journalists units).
  • Researching and reporting on a variety of other substantive topics to help CFJ further develop outreach, communication, advocacy, and expansion strategies.
  • Contributing to the refinement of TrialWatch’s methodology and assisting in the organization of TrialWatch-related events.
  • Undertaking other duties as assigned to support CFJ’s overall mission.

Required Skills/Experience:

  • J.D. degree
  • A minimum of 2 years of relevant experience
  • Outstanding written and oral communications skills
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to pursue multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Ability to think outside of the box and devise innovative solutions to problems
  • Willingness to contribute across the board as an integral member of a small team
  • Experience working in a range of environments and willingness to travel internationally

Preferred Skills/Qualifications:

  • Previous human rights/advocacy experience
  • Previous experience working abroad

Salary and benefits will be competitive with other not-for-profit organizations.

Please submit a resume, cover letter, and list of at least three references to
