About the Position:

THIS IS A DIRECT HIRE SOLICITATION - This position is being advertise through the Direct Hire Authority (DHA) for Domestic Defense Industrial Base (DIB) Facilities. Under this authority, competitive rating/ranking and veterans' preference procedures do not apply.

There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Aptitude and interest for learning Trade Theory and Practice. Applicants must meet the screen out element to be considered further. The work of the position normally includes the possession of mechanical aptitude and the willingness to learn. This can be demonstrated by achievement of passing grades in relevant and difficult subjects in school or satisfactory work performance.

Through industrial shop assignments, together with detailed instructions by shop instructors and/or senior craftsmen, you will be taught the set-up and operation of machine tools such as engine lathes, milling machines, drill presses, grinders, various numerical control machines, four and five axis automated machinery, and the hand work involved in bench and precision assembly jobs. You will be instructed on how to decide the best method to use to perform a given job, maximum machine cutting speeds and feeds to use, considering material being worked on, finish desired, machine capacity, the ability to measure parts accurately with precision and semi-precision measuring instruments, recognition of different types of metals and their physical properties, the use of which various machine tools are adapted; and related tasks incidental to the mastery of trade principles and practices.

You will be temporarily assigned to various other technical and administrative departments to experience the full range of training scheduled within the manufacturing facility. You will spend approximately 1,400 hours in formal academic classroom work under the direction of an instructor involving the essentials of courses such as Applied Technical Mathematics, Engineering Drawing and Microcomputer Drafting, Machining Processes Theory, Process Planning, Practice Metallurgy, Numerical Control Programming, and additional courses as required, to keep pace with trade technology.

These positions and the intended target positions are structured as part of a rigoroustraining program and as such, requires attendance at a local academic institution, following a set schedule, on non-duty time during the first two years of the training program.

Upon successful completion of the Apprenticeship Program, you will be promoted to the title of Machinist, WG-3414-10.

PHYSICAL EFFORT: The work of the Machinist Apprentice requires standing, stooping, bending, and reaching; and frequent handling of objects weighing up to 20 pounds and occasionally objects weighing as much as 40 pounds. However, hoists, hand trucks, lifts, and other workers are available to assist with heavier items.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Work in a well lighted, heated, ventilated shop with concrete floors. Exposed to dust from grinding, oil from machines, dirt, heat, noises, and fumes. Subject to the hazards of burns from hot metal chips, dust in the lungs, cuts, bruises, injuries to hands from use of machine and hand tools, skin irritation from contact with coolants, lubricants, and abrasive compounds, and to strains from infrequent moving, lifting, and handling of heavy items. Wear safety glasses, safety shoes, and other safety apparel and equipment as required.
