Job Summary
Put your considerable digital and print publishing skills to work by making an impact on thriving local government communities throughout the world. You’ll be responsible for taking the longest-standing magazine dedicated to sharing the leadership and management best practices of cities, counties, and towns to the next level. You’ll work seamlessly between our print and online platforms to deliver a rich, engaging experience for our members and thousands of other local government professionals.
This position requires a motivated, deadline-driven self-starter who understands the digital and print content lifecycle and thrives under pressure. Candidates for this position must have a hands-on approach to their work and must be comfortable writing and creating interactive material to engage the local government audience across multiple platforms.

Major Responsibilities:

  • A Monthly 30+page Print and Digital Publication
  •  Up to 6 multipage magazine supplements with a specific content focus
  • Magazine website portal
  • Bi-monthly newsletter
  • Content Acquisition – works with a wide variety of authors including local government practitioners, academics, and other subject matter experts to acquire the content required to fulfill the editorial calendar.
  • Interprets readership research, member data, and analytics to drive outstanding content that exceed readers’ expectations.
  • Monitors and reports on content analytics
  • Optimizes all magazine content for search engines and manages SEO campaigns
  • Writes copy for newsletters, website, social media channels and email marketing campaigns
  • Oversees copy editing and proofreading for print and digital editions
  • Works with Drupal or other open source content management system to upload and format content, hyperlink and style content, integrate video or other media to increase engagement and promote content.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the content development, content acquisition, and production processes for magazine publication, with the ability to enforce strict deadlines.
  • Knowledge of the principles of search engine optimization (SEO) and ability to apply them to magazine copy
  • Knowledge of Drupal or other open source content management system
  • Skill in research, writing, and editing
  • Ability to upload content and integrate video or other media
  • Ability to adapt to changes in priorities, technology, and new opportunities

Other requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in journalism, communications, interactive media, creative writing or equivalent combination of education and experience. Master’s degree preferred.
  • 8-10 years of print and digital publishing experience working with search engines, CMS, analytics, and related software.
  • Demonstrated entrepreneurial outlook, looking for ways to increase audiences, subscribers, advertising revenues, etc.
