Assistant City Attorney
Duties: Performs difficult professional work assisting the City Attorney and will be involved in preparing ordinances, resolutions and opinions; prepares legal memoranda; reviewing documents; represents the City in civil cases, appeals and administrative matters, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the general direction of the City Attorney. Provides legal, policy advice and counsel under the supervision of the City Attorney to the Winston-Salem Police Department, Winston-Salem Fire Department and Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Emergency Management; Manages an administrative caseload; reviews assigned documents; Develops strong working relationships with department personnel and internal service departments in accordance with the City Attorney’s policies, standards, and practices; Responds to inquiries on police, fire and emergency management related matters that require the expertise of a legal advisor; Conducts research and analysis on a variety of issues under the supervision of the City Attorney and at the direction of the Police Chief and other Police Command staff, Fire Chief and other Fire Command staff and Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Emergency Management Director and staff and provide recommendations; Composes and/or edits reports, proposed legislation, letters and other materials; assists as requested in conducting legal research and developing strategies in response to claims and lawsuits involving the Police Department, Fire Department and Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Emergency Management; Consults on public disclosure-related issues; Meets with the City Attorney to review and discuss legal advice and related strategies; Prepares ordinances, resolutions and opinions, legal memoranda, administrative matters, and performs related work as required under the supervision of the City Attorney; Prepares cases and represents or assists in representing the City in problems of a legal nature; Prepares written legal opinions and gives legal advice as required; Reviews and prepares legal documents, including departmental contracts; Responds to open records requests; Attends City Council and Committee meetings to provide legal advice; May be required to work additional hours, as needed, in order to accomplish assigned work; Attends training, seminars, workshops, etc., as required to maintain job knowledge and skills; Drafts nuisance abatement letters, complaints and other legal documents and handles all aspects of nuisance abatement litigation; and Performs other related duties as assigned.
