Profile

This is skilled, journeyman level mechanic work of more than average difficulty in the installation, maintenance and repair of air conditioning and related equipment.

An employee in this class inspects malfunctioning air conditioning units, tests equipment, diagnoses problems, repairs equipment, and replaces parts and refrigerant. The employee also makes regular preventive maintenance inspections of units, makes operating adjustments, lubricates units and changes filters. The employee usually works alone under general supervision and must exercise reasonable initiative and independent judgment in determining action to be taken.

Work is reviewed by an assigned supervisor through inspection of work completed, reports from users of equipment, study of work reports and analysis of operating and maintenance costs.

JOB REQUIREMENTS & WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Have successfully graduated from a standard high school or possess an acceptable G.E.D. certificate from a recognized issuing agency. Have at least four (4) years of experience in the maintenance and repair of air conditioning and refrigeration systems, including experience in the maintenance and repair of central units up to seventy-five (75) tons capacity, air handlers and cooling towers. Possess a valid Journeyman Mechanical Certificate of Competency in air conditioning issued by the Broward County Central Examining Board. OR

A recognized equivalent certificate as approved by the Broward County Central Examining Board.  Persons possessing an equivalent certificate must obtain a Broward County Certificate within one (1) year of employment. Possess or be able to obtain a Universal Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) certificate within six (6) months from date of appointment. Possess valid State of Florida Class E driver's license with an acceptable driving record.

HOW TO APPLY/ VETERAN INFORMATION:

Depending on the number of applicants and the quality of their education and experience, the examination may consist of one or more of the following tests: Evaluation of Training and Experience, Oral Interview, Written Examination, or other assessment method. Applicants must attain a minimum score of 70 in each part of the examination in order to qualify. All successful applicants will be required to pass a medical examination, including drug screening, prior to appointment.

An eligible veteran who enters an open-competitive examination shall receive preference points added to the total passing score earned in the examination as provided for in the Florida Statutes. To obtain veteran's preference, candidates MUST submit a copy of separation papers and the City of Fort Lauderdale's veteran's preference claim form ( J204
