The Employment and Administrative Mandate (EAM) Section of the California Department of Justice is looking for litigators who are dedicated to ensuring that California's laws are enforced fairly and as intended.  EAM deputies focus on public employment litigation in state and federal courts throughout California.

DEPUTY ATTORNEY GENERAL DUTIES

• Defending over 100 state agencies in lawsuits involving claims under the Fair Employment and Housing Act, Title VII, ADA, FMLA, CFRA, and the whistleblower protection act, among others.
• Independently handling all aspects of a broad range of complex civil employment cases, including challenging the pleadings, interviewing witnesses, conducting depositions and other discovery, preparing summary judgment motions, expert discovery, and preparing for trial.
• Handling jury and bench employment trials.
• Handling contested administrative evidentiary hearings before the State Personnel Board.
• Defending agency administrative actions against petitions for writs of mandamus.
• Handling any appeals arising from assigned cases, including drafting appellate briefs and arguing before the Courts of Appeal and Ninth Circuit.
• Obtaining work safety and gun violence restraining orders.
   

QUALIFICATIONS

• Active member in good standing of the California state bar
• At least 3 years of litigation experience is preferable, but EAM will consider candidates with less experience.
• Civil litigation experience in California state or federal courts
• Excellent legal research skills
• Effective oral and written advocacy skills in preparing briefs, presenting testimony, and advocating at hearings before administrative bodies, trial courts, and appellate courts
• Ability to interview witnesses and examine both percipient and expert witnesses at depositions, hearings, and trials
• Experience advising and communicating with clients
• Ability to learn and competently navigate litigation and document management software
• Employment litigation experience is a plus, but not required

SALARY RANGES

• Deputy Attorney General (less than 6 years of experience):  $7,153.00 - $10,836.00
• Deputy Attorney General III (at least 6 years of legal experience):  $10,225.00 - $13,118.00
• Deputy Attorney General IV (at least 10 years of legal experience):  $11,296.00 - $14,503.00
• Deputy Attorney General V:  $11,932.00 - $15,228.00
