Engineer- Electric Glass Melting
Location: Granville, Ohio - United States PURPOSE OF THE JOB The successful electric melting engineer will fully own the process innovation and advanced application of electrical energy to melt glass. Design responsibilities will include power systems, transformers, controllers, electrodes and safety systems for electric melters. The engineer will lead project definition with plant team, linking capital delivery, sourcing and EHS to deliver turnkey electric melting systems for Owens Corning. The engineer must have an in depth knowledge of electric power, controls and related equipment plus general glass furnace knowledge. This senior engineering role includes technical scope definition, cost estimating, and successful implementation of both new electric melting systems and rebuild upgrade projects. Reports to : Melting Technology R&D Leader JOB RESPONSIBILITIES Demonstrates a Commitment to Safety and Provides Technical Guidance for Safety Utilize technical knowledge to provide safe furnace electric melting system designs Ensures rigorous compliance to standard safety procedures and Owens Corning corporate policies Participates in monthly safety meetings and TC safety audits Authors SOPs and JHAs for new method development and implementation Completes all required safety training Provides Division Level Technical Leadership for Electric Melting Designs and Upgrades Understands current cold top and boost designs and operating criteria. Leads effort to improve electric melting functionality and life with cost justified investments. Drives for standardization in electric melting design across Owens Corning. Searches for electric melting solutions for Mineral Wool plants. Participates in the scope development and execution of all electric melting projects to ensure safety, performance, schedule and cost goals are met. Provides process leadership via contact with equipment suppliers to understand the development of new power controllers, transformers and electrode designs for all rebuilds. Leverages external engineering alliance partners to deliver design packages. JOB REQUIREMENTS Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering (Power and/or Controls) is required. An advanced degree is preferred. 5-8 years of experience within glass melting design and operations, preferably in fiberglass Desire to expand project experience within a furnace design area is beneficial for career growth Willingness to travel up to 40% to support electric melt projects at North American locations Experience: Desire to expand project experience within a furnace design area is beneficial for career growth In depth knowledge of electric power equipment, controls, protection and National Electric Code design. Fundamental understanding of glass melting process related to electrical energy introduction. Project management skills for scope definition, design review and implementation on multiple programs. Effective verbal and written communications. Computer skills: ability to utilize OC systems and software necessary for this role. Functional ability to manipulate operational data with BI toolset strong want.
