Senior Director, Global Tax Controversy
The candidate will be responsible for all of Regeneron’s tax controversy matters and will be a critical member of the tax team providing technical input on planning and expansion projects. Leading Regeneron’s U.S. federal, state, and foreign tax controversy strategy and procedure (e.g., audits, appeals, litigation, advance rulings, mutual agreement procedures, cooperative compliance), including serving as Regeneron’s representative with the IRS and other tax authorities. Developing and maintaining global tax risk management processes to mitigate future audit exposure, including strategic input on current initiatives, reviewing technical positions, assessment of accounting reserves, and implementation of processes and policies including oversight and preparation of audit-ready files. Researching, reviewing, and/or drafting documentation involving complex tax issues and strategies, including but not limited to tax technical memoranda, operating manuals, corporate policies, and inter-company and third-party agreements. Coordinating and collaborating with subject matter experts both within the tax team and at external advisors, as well as collaborating with partners across the business, to provide technical support as may be required in an exhilarating business environment. Ensuring consistency in approach between federal, state, and foreign audits, planning initiatives, and reporting positions, including with respect to intercompany arrangements, tax planning initiatives, business development initiatives, and tax reporting positions. Collaborating with personnel from all areas of the Company to educate colleagues about the tax organization and processes, as well as to collect and analyze data necessary for audit defense and supporting documentation. Should have the personal drive and enthusiasm to understand and successfully navigate a fast-growing company in a constantly evolving marketplace. Should have a hands-on and entrepreneurial style – someone who looks to become personally involved in all elements of managing their functional responsibility through to the end of projects; is a strategic problem solver, able to define and develop a clear picture of future direction and objectives for the function and develop comprehensive implementation plans; have strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to plan and implement at strategic and tactical levels; establish strong relationships and have organizational and interpersonal skills, to contribute to a collaborative environment that fosters open communication and a culture of excellence, integrity, and accountability for a growing team; have excellent communication skills, and enjoy working with personnel at all levels of the global organization, including senior leadership; able to explain complex technical issues and requirements to non-tax colleagues and leaders. Should have 15+ years of relevant experience in a corporate environment, law firm, or accounting firm; have a JD or equivalent, with an MBA, LLM, or Master’s degree is a “plus; have experience and technical competency in tax controversy, tax planning, and tax strategy, including exposure to international structures, business models and global complexity; experienced in partnering closely with all aspects of tax management including U.S. federal income tax law, international income tax law, state and local tax law, and foreign and domestic sales tax law.
