Immigration Justice Project - Legal Fellow
The candidate provides direct representation under the supervision of attorneys or accredited representatives to detained adults or children in removal proceedings. Provides legal services in connection with orientation and pro se legal assistance programs, review referrals from those programs, and identify cases that are eligible for LDP representation. Participates in internal and external professional development opportunities, including training designed for qualified representatives (QRs) of mentally incompetent noncitizens. Follows guidance on data reporting for the Legal Defense Program as directed by the Managing Attorney, in accordance with the County of San Diego. Observes ethical practices regarding confidentiality and maintain a high standard of professional conduct. Performs other related duties as required. Should have a Juris Doctorate (JD) or Master of Laws (LLM) degree from an ABA-accredited law school. Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office products, Google tools, and video teleconference software. Fluency in Spanish or a third language (e.g., Portuguese) in written and spoken forms. Experience working, volunteering, or interning within the immigration legal field, specifically in removal defense. Ability to travel to and enter detention centers as well as regular travel to the San Diego Immigration Court in downtown San Diego. Have taken the CA Bar Exam and awaiting the results. Prior experience and professional dedication to providing legal services on behalf of people in custody, members of oppressed and marginalized groups, and people with a prior history of involvement in the criminal and immigration legal systems. Prior volunteer, community, or work experience with immigrants, asylum seekers, or refugees, or in the field of immigration or detention.
