Head of Op Risk Advisory – SEAm

What’s the role?

The Head of Operational Risk Advisory – Shell Energy Americas (SEAm) is a new second line role and will work in partnership with 1LOD to embed the components of the integrated framework for the Risk Management Approach across T&S. The role will report to the T S Head of Operational Risk Advisory and be a trusted advisor to the SEAm Line of Business (LoB) to implement pragmatically & commercially the integrated framework as the maturity of the function develops over time.

As a Head of Op Risk Advisory – SEAm , you will be responsible of the following duties:

Provide 2nd line business-facing expertise and guidance on Operational Risk topics within T&S as it applies to Shell Energy Americas

Advising commercial leadership teams and the Business Integration and Assurance Managers (BIAMs, responsible for risk management in the first line) on how to apply and operationalise the policies and procedures describing the framework for the Risk Management Approach within their business as they relate to operational risk

Support and partner with the business/BIAM teams to implement components of the integrated framework for the Risk Management Approach providing appropriate training, ongoing guidance and respectful challenge

Support business decisions by providing advice and direction to the commercial businesses on the health of the SEAm control frameworks for Operational Risk

Contribute to governance meetings related to the Operational Risk profile

Support the generation of operational risk profiles

Escalate operational risk/control issues to commercial stakeholders and advise on steps to be taken by the business to manage and/or mitigate the issue

Act as the as the primary advisor on risk management to the Front Office Controls

Promote a positive risk culture which supports a “Learner Mindset” around operational risk issues and encourages learnings from incidents

Support documentation of Control Learning Events (or equivalent “lessons learned”) by 1LOD and, where appropriate, facilitate the “read across” in the LoB / T&S

Support the commercial business in assessing the design and effectiveness of business controls for Operational Risk whilst providing independent challenge and independent assurance where appropriate

Escalate operational risk/control issues to senior commercial leaders and advise on steps to be taken by the business to manage and/or mitigate the issue

What we need from you –

You must have legal authorization to work in the Brazil on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer

You must have minimum of 10 years of working experience in any work related

Bachelor’s Degree in Finance, Economics or equivalent experience is required

Must have demonstrable deep experience of having worked at a large complex peer institution (Oil & Gas Major, Independent Commodity Trader, Investment Manager / Bank,) in a first- or second-line risk and control team.

Ideally experience of physical and financial commodity trading and/or having worked in a regulated trading business

Technical understanding of the suite of controls which are generally employed to mitigate various types of Operational Risk within a complex trading organization and ability to articulate “what does good look like?” to the LoB

Deep understanding and technical knowledge of non-financial risk management in a complex Trading organization specific to the LoB

Clear understanding of the “3 Lines of Defense” model and segregation of duties for each LOD.

Proven ability to work in partnership with the 1st line of defense to deliver pragmatic risk management solutions and relevant for the business

Strategic thinker with a proven ability to articulate a vision and to communicate this vision to key stakeholders

Commercial understanding and good judgement to provide advice, whilst balancing risk and reward

Strong communication skills, confidence to speak up and challenge plus ability to form effective relationships with stakeholders across Commercial, Risk, Compliance and Finance organizations as well as other support functions

Experience in leading and motivating teams, including proven ability to manage and deliver through others, working with people from different cultural backgrounds and in a virtual, global environment
