Chief Public Defender
The candidate will supervise 17 attorneys and diverse support staff members providing a full range of trial-level criminal defense services to all Public Defender clients. Will provide legal assistance as needed in juvenile court proceedings involving children in need of services, termination of parental rights and juvenile delinquency matters. Manage the office, interact as needed with other county government officers, and supervise all staff members who are engaged in conducting client interviews, both in and out of correctional facilities, preparing for and conducting jury and bench trials involving both misdemeanor and felony cases, assisting in locating witnesses, drafting appropriate motions and general correspondence as needed, and performing such other duties as may be necessary to the professional and competent representation of indigent persons charged with criminal offenses. Draft a detailed budget annually for consideration of the firm. Screening, interviewing and hiring responsibility in respect to all staff members, the Chief will provide direction and supervision to support staff and investigators, and will be expected to personally handle a reduced number of cases in both felony and misdemeanor courts as a means of maintaining regular connection with prosecuting attorneys, judges, court staff, as well as the lay and professional members of the firm Public Defender’s Office the Chief is charged with supervising. Should have a Law degree (J.D.) from an accredited law school. Must be admitted to practice law in the State of Indiana. Should have criminal Law experience. Bi-lingual (Spanish) abilities helpful.
