The Anatomy and Neurobiology Department for the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) has an exciting opportunity for a Senior Accountant in an expanding research department. This position requires an individual who is a self-starter, resourceful, detail-oriented and has attention to accuracy. The senior accountant will be responsible for analyzing our expenditures on grants and contracts, working with central services to correct errors and distributing accurate monthly reports. Knowledge of advanced business math and excel spreadsheets and pivot tables. Experience with managing multiple projects, shadows systems and producing time sensitive documents preferred.
Primary Duties:
-Performs advanced level review and complex analysis of accounting transactions related to grants and contracts to ensure completeness, accuracy, and conformance with uniform accounting principles and practices.
-Prepares and reviews general ledger activities and advance level accounting transactions ensuring completeness, internal accuracy, and conformance with uniform Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
-Reviews financial statements for accuracy and compliance, such as income statement, balance sheet, and operating activities cash flows. Ensure accounts are in agreement and identify variances. Investigates discrepancies to determine cause and document correction. Enters budget, modifications and operating expenditures from the grants into our shadow system.Ensures accuracy of all operating expenditures and e-mails monthly reports. Submits debit memos according to agency regulations.
-Responsible for closing out the accounts and ensuring that all funds are spent according to guidelines.
-Ensures details of financial transactions of grants and contracts that are recorded in journals, ledgers, and automated system by others. Examines and ensure integrity/reliability of the financial accounting system. Works with principal investigators, faculty, or staff members to identify potential ledger discrepancies between financial system and departmental records.
-Verifies the accuracy of various internal/external financial ledgers, schedules, exhibits and summaries along with any assigned databases and ensures application of policies, procedures, and acceptable standards.
-Assists in defining and monitoring of financial critical path unit and project activities, resolves issues and escalates complex matters as needed to the appropriate contact(s).
-Utilizes quantitative and qualitative approaches to develop financial forecast performance. Assists in the development of short-and long-term forecast for unit. Manages the travel and procard system in the department and monitors the reimbursements and expenses submitted by other staff members. Submits Bioresco and Veterinary Resource charges for the department always ensuring that expenses are allocated correctly.
-Monitors and delegates assigned budgetary transactions (accounts receivable, forecasts) on a daily basis.
-Manages the subawards in the department and ensures that all funds are spent according to the regulations.
-Reviews tangible and intangible asset statements and assist in development of lifecycle asset management plan.
-Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Education: Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration.
Experience: Three (3) years of accounting related experience using Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.
Experience with managing multiple projects and shadows systems and with producing time sensitive documents preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
