MSRC is currently seeking an Associate General Counsel to join our leadership team in Houston, TX. The position reports to the General Counsel. The desired candidate will have the ability to demonstrate experience, skill and motivation to transition to General Counsel within 12 months.
JOB SUMMARY
The Associate General Counsel works with the Vice President, General Counsel, and independently on a variety of legal issues relating to MSRC’s business and response activities.
This position requires a significant level of expertise, independent decision-making, and guidance for matters having Company-wide impact.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Provide legal advice and counsel to senior management on a broad range of business topics, transactions, general corporate matters, and business development.
Operate both collaboratively and independently within MSRC’s regional and corporate structure.
Research legal issues, including issues relating to the environment, compliance and employment law.
Serve as legal counsel during oil spill response operations.
Monitor relevant federal and state legislation and regulations, and supervise required filing requirements.
Engage and supervise outside counsel as needed.
Supervise litigation-related matters.
Manage MSRC’s risk exposure from ethical, operations, or compliance matters.
Promote and support MSRC’s corporate wide Management System.
QUALIFICATIONS
A Juris Doctor Law degree from an accredited university.
Licensed to practice law in Texas, or willingness to become licensed.
Minimum of 5 - 10 years of broad-based experience in corporate, employment, environmental, regulatory, and/or other relevant law at a major law firm, government agency or corporation.
Prior working experience within the following areas are a plus:
The Oil Pollution Act of 1990
Maritime Law
Tax-exempt organizations
Contracts and leases
Insurance and Risk Management
Government contracting
Ability to build strong working relationships with all stakeholders.
Ability to be available during non-business hours, as required.
Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook).
Competent public speaker with excellent verbal, written and presentation skills.
This position requires proof of COVID-19 vaccination.
