Education / Licensure / Certification:



High School Diploma or equivalent



Valid North Carolina driver's license and acceptable driving record (if driving Cone Health vehicle, must have five (5) years of driving experience and MVR must be approved by Risk Management); successfully pass a criminal history record verification; able to successfully complete CPI (deescalation) and AHA Health Care Provider BLS (CPR) qualifications within the first full year of employment.



Years of Experience:


Six (6) months of security, military, law enforcement, fire fighting or EMS experience. *Work experience in a customer service industry may also be considered.


Three (3) years of security, military, law enforcement, fire fighting or EMS experience.

• Testing - Must satisfactorily complete a writing test.

• Critical Thinking/Decision Making - Must have and demonstrate problem-solving skills. Must be able to exercise independent judgment in emerging situations. Must be able to make independent decisions with little involvement from a manager.

• Customer Service Skills - Ability to remain calm and composed in all situations. Ability to interact effectively with a diverse customer base.

• Physical Fitness - Must maintain a reasonable level of fitness.


Heavy Work:

Exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally (up to 1/3 of the time), and/or; 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently (1/3 to 2/3 of the time), and/or; 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly (2/3 or more of the time) to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body.

Respirator Fit Testing: Required


Hear and differentiate low volume sounds in order to make judgments regarding actions needed

Hear alarm bells, verbal conversations, telephone voices and normal volume sounds

Close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less)

Distance vision (clear vision at 20 feet or more)

Job Description:


This system-wide position is accountable to assist in providing a safe and secure environment of care for patients, visitors, and staff in compliance with Cone Health policies and the Joint Commission requirements. This position is also responsible to direct and assist with pedestrian and vehicular traffic on the campus.


Patrols assigned hospital areas and enforces applicable policies and procedures in order to maintain a safe and secure environment of care. Keeps the patient at the center of all decisions. (20%)

Responds to alarms and emergencies, and assists health care professionals with all routine requests in order to maintain a secure environment and to meet hospital safety standards. Provides exceptional service through courteous and professional interaction with patients, families and visitors. Appropriately intervenes when patients, families or visitors become agitated, aggressive or abusive. (25%)

Responds to and accurately documents all campus incidents, thefts and accidents. Also, records daily activities and accurately reports events to maintain a record of departmental activities. (20%)

Attends and completes all required Joint Commission, Cone Health and departmental training. (10%)

Performs daily lock and unlock of campus offices, rooms and buildings. (15%)

Provides motor vehicle assistance to staff and visitors (i.e. jumpstart vehicles, door unlocks, assist with flat tires and retrieve valeted cars.) (10%)


Occurs under one-third of the time:

Exposure to bloodborne pathogens

Hazardous waste and/or toxic/caustic chemicals

Occurs up to two-thirds of the time:

Fumes or airborne particles

Additional information on working conditions

- The work schedule for each employee will be arranged by the Security managers in order to staff the department for maximum efficiency.

- The officer may be presented with unpredictable situations that are fluid and varied. This would include contact with patients, visitors, and staff under a wide array of circumstances that may subject the officer to many interruptions.

- The officer may be confronted with emergency and crisis situations.

- The officer may be exposed to inclement weather conditions that require walking on different surfaces.
