Job Overview:

A distinguished intellectual property law firm located in Alexandria, VA is seeking a highly skilled Patent Agent or Technical Advisor with a background in electrical or computer engineering. The successful candidate will join a dynamic team focused on securing patent rights for emerging technologies, particularly in the fields of semiconductors, software, and artificial intelligence. This role offers a hands-on opportunity to work closely with inventors and global clients, supporting innovation through comprehensive patent protection strategies.

Duties:

• Draft technical patent applications involving electrical, computer, and software-related inventions

• Analyze USPTO office actions and craft persuasive responses

• Conduct invention disclosure meetings with engineers and scientists

• Support the prosecution of patent applications from filing to grant

• Collaborate with attorneys to develop strategic IP portfolios

• Translate complex technical information into clear, concise patent documents

• Stay current with advancements in AI, semiconductor, and software technologies

Requirements:

• Minimum of 2 years of experience in a law firm or patent boutique setting focusing on patent drafting and prosecution

• Familiarity with U.S. patent laws and procedures, especially in software and AI-related applications

• Demonstrated ability to write high-quality technical documents

• Strong verbal communication and client interaction skills

• Attention to detail and the ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment

Education:

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field required

• Master’s degree or PhD preferred

• Additional technical coursework or certifications are considered a plus

Certifications:

• USPTO Registration (for Patent Agents) is strongly preferred

• Additional technical credentials (e.g., software development certifications) are advantageous

Skills:

• Proficiency in patent application writing and technical analysis

• Deep understanding of electrical and computer engineering principles

• Familiarity with AI, machine learning, and semiconductor systems

• Strong research capabilities and analytical reasoning

• Excellent writing, editing, and communication skills

• Ability to explain complex concepts to non-technical audiences
