Law Clinic Attorney
The candidate will be responsible for practicing law and helping the Law Clinic Director supervise students who work on a variety of civil legal matters, primarily related to family law. The Law Clinic Attorney may teach a few classes, as needed, but classroom teaching is not the primary task for this position. The Law Clinic Attorney will also assist in marketing of Law Clinic by posting relevant and non-confidential material on social media accounts, developing know-your-rights materials, and fostering community relationships for outreach and collaboration. Juris Doctorate degree or equivalent combination of education and experience. Five years of experience in family law practice with some familiarity of law relating to veterans. Licensed by the State Bar of Texas for 5 years minimum. May work more than 40 hours when needed. Ability to mentor law students and supervise their work. Ability to assign tasks to students and provide feedback on their performance. Ability to work with a variety of populations, including veterans, immigrants, victims of child abuse and neglect or domestic violence. Ability to navigate technology, including social media platforms, law practice management, and grant reporting software. Ability to manage a docket with a mix of cases that focus on needs of families and veterans and include family law, VA benefits, protective orders, and other related areas of civil law. Ability to learn new areas of law if not familiar with above areas of practice. Ability to learn how to work with our grantor and assist in grant management duties. Ability to work with and build new community collaborators to organize CLEs, outreach events, informational programs, and new client intake. Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others. Experience in representing low-income clients and mentoring law students. Licensed by the Federal District Court for the Northern District of Texas. Licensed by the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals. Veterans Affairs Accredited Representative. Ability to speak Spanish. Supervises law students in the Law Clinic by providing students with direction and assistance on addressing caseload. Attends court with students and being present at all hearings were students appear. Reviews, provides feedback, edits, and approves all letters, emails, documents, trial notebooks, and other work product produced by students. Advises students in all aspects of cases (strategy, research, investigations, drafting, preparing for trial, conducting hearings, etc.). Helps students manage client relationships and ensures students properly document work done in physical case files and law practice management systems. Enters time weekly and closing out cases in a timely manner. Meets with students at least weekly to discuss case status and strategy. Assists or covers for other supervising attorney’s clients or students when needed. Is primarily responsible for grant caseload at all times and may work without student assistance when students are not available. Contributes data and information to compile and timely complete grant reports for Law Clinic funders. Collaborates with the law school’s marketing team to promote the Law Clinic to students and general public by updating social media. Attends CLE conferences and events, including statewide conferences for family law, veterans, and poverty law, as funding permits. Participates in the AALS New Clinicians Conference and other conferences deemed necessary or helpful to execute duties. Provides other administrative support, as needed. Co-teaches the classroom component, when needed, and may be asked to develop teaching materials. Treats students with respect and models professional and ethical behavior that upholds and enhances the reputation of the Law Clinic, the law school, and clinical program. Works in collaboration with Texas Lawyers for Texas Veterans and other bar groups on events specifically developed to provided legal services to veterans. Helps coordinate know-your rights events and workshops that engage clinic and non-clinic students in pro bono work. Performs other duties as assigned.
