Purpose & Accountabilities :

The Aviation R&D team is centered in Houston and is responsible for the development and support of all Shell Aviation’s product lines for both fuels and lubricants. The team’s primary purpose is to support aggressive targets in the aviation sector by either developing new products or through the improvement of existing products.

The role of Aviation Rig Technician will focus on all aspects of the engine facility such as ensuring availability of the facility for testing, carrying out testing programs and reporting data back to other R&D team members, participating in expanding the capabilities of the facility, optimizing costs of operation of the facility and building a network within the aviation industry that may be leveraged to assist with facility operations as a primary function. Additionally, the aviation rig technician will be expected to participate in supporting other laboratory-based areas of the R&D team. These areas primarily include blending activities of fuels (avgas and jet) and lubricants (piston engine oils, turbine engine oils and hydraulic fluids).

Dimensions :

The engine facility is funded through individual projects on an as-needed basis. During periods of low use, this role will support other areas of the aviation R&D agenda, such as assisting with fuels and lubricants blending or testing, using both standard and custom test procedures.

Skills & Requirements :

This role requires a background in aviation R&D, proven experience managing engine test cell operations, strong familiarity with aviation engines, an ability to translate project leader requirements into test campaigns to provide the supporting data necessary for successful project completion, very strong relationship skills (internal and external), good commercial acumen and a proactive approach. Specific challenges will include:

Ability to maintain, troubleshoot and operate an aviation engine test cell with altitude simulation capability.

Ability to build relationships across a wide range of internal and external stakeholders. Must be able to earn the trust of regulatory bodies and Oil Equipment Manufacturing (OEMs).

Able to clearly communicate with stakeholders, to ensure testing operations are clearly linked to program requirements.

Demonstrated experience in formulating aviation lubricants (piston engine oils, turbine engine oils, hydraulic fluids) and fuels (avgas, jet).

Requirements:

Must have legal authorization to work in the US on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer

Diploma or Bachelors Degree in Mechanical Technician or Aviation Technician or any related field

Research science or engineering background (strong preference to candidates with aviation experience)

Minimum of 3 years formulating aviation lubricants and fuels.

Proven ability to operate and maintain an aviation engine testing facility.

Understanding of the aviation sector, either through education or in-job experience.

Strong team-working, interpersonal and networking skills demonstrated in a distributed environment.Proven ability to deliver tasks as agreed on time and within planned budget allocations.

Understanding of the commercial elements of the aviation sector.

Proven record of pro-active participation to further project goals.

Innovative and creative approach to problem-solving.

Knowledge of simulated altitude equipment (operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting)

Strong skills in materials compatibility testing of aviation products.

Ability to work with other Shell functions and third parties to deliver solutions.
